Jewell Students Receive Prestigious Honors

Over the last four years, William Jewell students have claimed numerous national scholarships and honors. In fact William Jewell was one of only three colleges and universities in America in 2003 that could boast of having a Goldwater scholar, a Marshall scholar, and a USA Today Academic All-American. The other two were Stanford and Harvard.

This year, William Jewell had a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship competition! Christopher Rosson advanced to the finalist stage of the Rhodes Scholarship competition. Rosson, a senior business administration and economics major at William Jewell, was interviewed by members of the Rhodes selection committee in Kansas City on November 18 and 19.

Rhodes Scholarships provide two or three years of study at Oxford University. The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest of the international study awards available to American students, were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, a British philanthropist and colonial pioneer. Rhodes applicants are chosen on the basis of high academic achievement, integrity of character, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for others, potential for leadership, and physical vigor.

"Chris is a bright and engaging student who embodies the very best of the liberal arts tradition of rigorous scholarship and intellectual inquiry," said Dr. Lois Anne Harris, chair of the college's Prestigious Fellowships Committee.

The chart below shows how William Jewell compares with some of the top-ranked liberal arts schools in the Midwest over the past four years, in terms of students being awarded prestigious scholarships and honors.
