Great start for Cardinal Men's Basketball

Fresh off a season in which the William Jewell Basketball Cardinals were named the number one seed in the postseason NAIA Division II National Tournament, the Cardinals remain a national favorite as evidenced by the number 2 ranking in the NAIA national poll. So far, the Cardinals have upheld these lofty expectations by posting a 10-3 mark.

The Cardinals began the season with wins against perennial national tournament participant Concordia University of Seward, NE and against Bethel College of Newton, KS in the Hampton Inn Classic held at Jewell on the 4th and 5th of November. Senior Ronald Robinson, named Most Valuable Player, had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the Concordia game. Senior Drew Matthews was named to the 5-man All-Star team and had 25 points, 12 rebounds against Concordia and 20 points and 8 rebounds against Bethel.

The Cardinals followed up these home wins with a 72-52 win on the road against Ottawa University. During this contest, Drew Mathews surpassed the 1,000 point mark in his career and is currently 34th on the all-time scoring list for men's basketball.

After a 78-74 setback in a closely contested game on the road at College of the Ozarks, the Cardinals improved their record to 10-3 and 4-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference by defeating Benedictine, Missouri Valley, NAIA Division I Park University, NCAA Division II Rockhurst University, archrival Mid-America Nazarene, and Central Methodist University. The only other blemishes on the Cardinals record is a 74-61 loss to NCAA Division II Emporia State University on December 3 and a 69-54 loss at Evangel on December 16.

The Cardinals' five seniors (pictured) are pacing the way for early
success. They are led by Drew Mathews (who shot 10-10 from the field and 7-7 from the free-throw line against Benedictine), Ronald Robinson (averaging 18 points per game and 6 rebounds per game), Cam Cooper (who broke the record for most 3's in a career against Missouri Valley), Kyle Lower who is averaging 6 assists a game and Cody Ptacek who has been the sixth man averaging over 20 minutes a game.
