WJC Inducts Four Alumni and Two Teams Into WJC Athletic Hall of Fame

Four individuals and two teams were inducted into the William Jewell College Athletic Hall of Fame during award ceremonies held at the Alumni Dinner during Homecoming on October 14

WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

The Hall of Fame was established in 1994 to recognize outstanding achievement by William Jewell College alumni and/or faculty in the areas of athletic achievement, coaching, or other noteworthy accomplishments in athletic related areas. The selection is based solely on what the individual or team accomplished while associated with William Jewell College.

2006 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Mr. Bob Hawkins ‘58

Bob graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Bob was a three-year letter winner in football and a third team NAIA All-American halfback in 1957. Bob was the first William Jewell student-athlete to be named to any NAIA All-American team. He was also a member of Aeons (senior men’s honorary), a member of Pi Gamma Mu, J Club (secretary) and Sons of Rest.

Mr. Larry Libeer ‘69

Larry graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He was a three-year letter winner in baseball and was named a second team NAIA All-American shortstop in 1969. Larry hit the game winning home-run in the bottom of the 13th inning to win Jewell’s first and only team National Championship in 1968 over Georgia Southern. He was a member of J Club and Physical Education Majors Club.

Mr. Brook Russell ‘96

Brook graduated with a degree in Mathematics. He was twice named basketball team MVP, twice named first team All-Conference, and he was named on the second team NAIA II All-American as a junior and a first team All-American as a senior. He was also named to the NAIA II National Tournament All-Star Team twice and named the NAIA II National Player of the Year as a senior. When the basketball season was over, Brook turned his attention to track, where he is a school record holder in both the high jump and long jump (indoor and outdoor). He was on the Dean’s List six times, was named the
Heart of America Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete all four years, and NAIA Academic All-American four times - twice in basketball and twice in track. Brook is the only athlete (male or female) in the history of WJC to have his jersey retired.

Ms. Elizabeth Young ‘82

Elizabeth graduated from Jewell with a degree in Physical Education. She was a three year letter winner in swimming and diving. Elizabeth was named a two-time NAIA All-American in 1981 by placing 6th in the NAIA National Meet in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competition. She held leadership positions in the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and served as editor of the yearbook.
