Fran
Schwenk becomes Jewell's 26th Head
Football Coach
The winningest football program
in the NAIA - the William Jewell
Football Cardinals - has a new coach
and is poised to enter the Top 25
in the national rankings!
The Cardinals are currently 4-3
and under new leadership this season.
Fran Schwenk became
|
|
Jewell's
26th Head Football Coach, bringing with
him a successful resume from 21 years at
Doane College. While at Doane, Coach Schwenk
compiled a 123-88-3 record, becoming the
first coach in Doane's history to reach
the 100-win mark. He brings the "Midwest
Coast" offense to William Jewell, a
term Coach Schwenk uses to describe his
brand of balancing running and passing plays
in a 50-50 fashion.
"We are pleased to have a coach of
Fran's caliber," said Dr. Jim Redd,
director of athletics and chair of the physical
education department at William Jewell.
"Fran is not only a gifted coach but
also a strong educator. He will play a key
role in developing the new physical education
and recreation and sport majors at William
Jewell."
So far this year, the Cardinals have recorded
impressive road victories over rival Baker
and pre-season conference champion Lindenwood
University, along with resounding home wins
over Avila University and Benedictine College.
In the season opener, they fell just a touchdown
short of what would have been a stunning
upset of #5-ranked Mid America Nazerene
University at Olathe, KS.
Coach Schewnck's balanced attack is led
this year by Senior quarterback Daniel Forrest,
currently ranked sixth in the Conference
in total offense at 175 yards per game.
The running game remains strong, with the
running back trio of Jason Agee, LeAndre
Estes and Leon Wiggins returning from a
combined total of over 2,000 yards rushing
that led the Conference last year. With
Seniors Brad Begemann and Matt Kastner,
and co-freshman of the year Matt Callaway,
the offensive line has three returning starters.
Senior Brett Jones continues to improve
on his strong junior season, which saw him
earn All-Conference honors at tight end.
The defense, which held opponents to 20
points a game last season, is once again
led by Junior linebacker Anthony Simone.
Simone led the conference last season with
108 total tackles. Senior cornerback Matt
Ferguson and senior defensive end Aaron
Bassore are in their third seasons as starters
on the Cardinals' defense.
At 4-3 and ranked #35 in the NAIA national
rankings, there is plenty of reason for
optimism surrounding the 2005 William Jewell
football program.
