Leadership
Program Finds a Home
In 2006, the College will dedicate
a new academic facility to support
our Leadership Development Program.
The Fred and Shirley Pryor Center
for Leadership Development, formerly
the Kappa Alpha fraternity house located
at 17 South Jewell Street, will provide
critical support to our curricular
and co-curricular leadership programs.
The building will include classrooms,
offices, a technology center and public
spaces to support a program that is
shaping tomorrow's leaders. Last year,
over 250 Jewell students regularly
participated in some segment of the
College's leadership development program.

The following program components will find
a home in the Center:
The Pryor Leadership Studies Program
is a competitive academic program that blends
theory with significant experiential components.
During the first semester, Pryor Fellows
complete a course on leadership theory and
explore strengths and weaknesses of their
own leadership style. Participants write
a growth plan to guide personal leadership
development. Before completing the program,
an Outward Bound expedition in the Florida
Everglades allows students to put leadership
into practice. Students also complete a
vocational internship, volunteer internship
and significant group Leadership Legacy
Project.
The Tucker Leadership Lab is a state-of-the-art
training center (high and low ropes course)
for groups coming from both inside and outside
the College. This facility is one of the
finest in the world and enables groups to
apply, test and enhance the skills essential
for leadership and effective teamwork. Last
year over 5,000 people participated, including
many corporate and community groups. The
Center for Leadership Development will house
the staging area for the Lab and the Tucker
staff.
American Humanics is a national alliance
of colleges, universities and nonprofit
organizations preparing undergraduates for
careers with youth and human service agencies.
The mission of American Humanics is to prepare
and certify future nonprofit professionals
to work with America's youth and families.
Jewell was deemed their finest college chapter
in 2003-2004. Our chapter will thrive in
the new Center.
Leadership coursework is now required in
both the Nursing and Business
Departments. A Minor in Nonprofit
Leadership is open to students in all
majors. Faculty offices and classrooms supporting
these initiatives will be housed in the
Center.
The Jewell Roundtable is a service
marketed to profit and nonprofit groups
throughout the region. Our leadership faculty
and facilitators, primarily utilizing a
dynamic piece of proprietary organizational
planning software, will help corporate and
non-profit groups build better boards, aid
in strategic planning and assist groups
in becoming more effective and efficient.
We are excited that our new facility will
help the College better serve the community
and engage strategic partners.
