Debate Team Still Strong

After great success in 2004-2005, the Jewell debate team, led by Dr. Gina Lane, won their first two tournaments of the season at the University of Wyoming and Truman State University. Phil Fuhrman, a senior from Bolivar, MO, and Luke Landry, a junior from Nixa, MO, defeated teams from Colorado College and McKendree University in the finals to win both tournaments. Georgia B. Bowman Parliamentary Debate Tournament, making it the largest tournament held in the Midwest this semester. Juniors Lilia Toson and Kevin Garner, both of Kansas City, placed third in the tournament, losing to eventual tournament champion Southern Illinois University in the semifinal round. Toson is the defending national champion top speaker of the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence.
