Members of Alumni Board of Governors contribute to college initiatives

The Alumni Board of Governors conducted their annual retreat on Saturday, July 28th at the Pryor Center for Leadership Development. The day-long retreat provided an opportunity to hear college updates and plan strategies for involvement over the next year. The Board established two major goals to accomplish this year: 1) establish "benchmarks" that will serve as a barometer for future Board of Governors projects, and 2) explore the possibility of hosting a signature event each year.

The Board has six committees that meet during the year on projects. Following is a summary of initiatives or projects the committees will be working on in the coming year.

Alumni Events
focuses on promoting alumni events throughout the year.

Awards and Recognition works on refining the overall awards process. The Board of Governors coordinates the nomination and selection process for the following awards: Young Distinguished Alumni Service, Distinguished Alumni Service, John F. Truex Lifetime Service and Honorary Alumni Awards.

Development plans to gather alumni testimonials for admission and advancement to use for their recruitment campaigns throughout the year. They will also support the Senior Promise, the senior class giving campaign.

Career Mentor commission usually works with 40-50 students per semester, matching students with mentors in the business world. This group is working with the college to see how they can be involved with the ACT-In major. They are also working on ways to increase volunteer involvement.

Future Alumni continues to work with the Department of Admission to find ways to connect with alumni, especially through the Jewell CARDS program.

Religious Life supports the evening vespers held at 5:30 p.m. on October 9, 10, and 11 in the White Atrium of the Yates-Gill College Union during Homecoming week. Three talented alumni will return to campus to lead students and alumni through reflective moments. This group will also help Jeff Buscher, campus minister, promote the first alumni mission trip to Honduras in spring 2008.
