1950s
Juarenne Moore Hester '55 was awarded the Alexander W. Doniphan Award, co-sponsored by The Clay County Millennium Historical Board and the Liberty Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The award is bestowed upon individuals who embody excellence in at least one of the areas for which Alexander Doniphan was known. Doniphan was revered as a statesman, military leader, attorney, educator and businessman. Previous recipients of the award include John Dillingham, John and Mary Pritchard, and Judge R. Kenneth Elliot.
1960s
Bill Snyder '62 received the Joe Spencer Award for Lifetime Achievement and Meritorious Service in Coaching at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Bill was an assistant coach there during the mid '70s. This honor is given annually to alumni or former coaches at Austin College for achievement in the coaching profession.
Robert Cunningham '63 retired from the Boeing Company in St. Louis, Mo. He works part-time as Minister of Administration at the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., where one of his major responsibilities is the construction of a $3.5 million gym and student center. Robert is also president of the University of Missouri-Columbia Physics Department Advisory Council (called Physics Leaders). Robert and Linda Kulmus Cunningham '62 reside in Glen Carbon, Ill.
Larry Holley '67 received the Marcus Priddy Award at the Great American Basketball League Honors Program held in the spring. This award honors the coach that makes a positive difference in the lives of their players.
Dan Harris '69 was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in the Meritorious Service Category at their National Convention in Kansas City. This is the association's highest honor. Dan and Peggy Smith Harris '70 reside in Baldwin City, Kan.
1970s
Cam Jury '72 retired as head baseball coach from Oak Park High School, Kansas City North. He will also be inducted into the Oak Park High School Alumni Hall of Fame during the fall festivities at Homecoming.
Beverly Oakes '77 received the Silver Award for the Best Children's Calendar presented by the Calendar Marketing Association I, the Retail Wall Calendar Division. Beverly created the wall calendar as a keepsake gift and learning tool with tablet lines to write a personalized message to Grandma and Grandpa. Beverly is President and Art Director of AccellArt, LLC in Joplin, Mo. Visit Beverly's website at www.accellart.com. She resides in Neosho, Mo.
Douglas Enderle '78 was awarded the Theme Park Image of the Year award for his designs at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The award was presented by the National Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors during their annual conference held in Atlanta, Ga. Douglas is a Senior Costume Designer and recently celebrated his twenty-fifth anniversary working for the Walt Disney Entertainment Company.
Michael Willett Newheart '78 received Honorable Mention in the Scripture category from the Catholic Press Association for his book entitled, "My Name Is Legion: " The Story and Soul of the Gerasene Demoniac." Michael, his wife Joy and their children Anastasia and Miranda, reside in Berwyn Heights, Md. where Michael is professor of New Testament language and literature at Howard University School of Divinity.
Eileen Houston-Stewart '79 was named the assistant to the superintendent for communication for the Liberty, Mo. School District. Eileen replaces Jim Dunn '71, who is retiring.
Ed Leonard '79 has become the thirteenth president of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. Bethany is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Ed was previously vice president for advancement at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.
1980s
Karen VanArsdale Brandenburg '83 was promoted to senior project manager leading Six Sigma deployment for North America Customer CARE at Nokia, Inc. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects in any type of process. Karen resides in Carrollton, Texas.
Timothy Mottet '84 accepted the position as Professor and the Henry & Margaret Hauser Endowed Chair in communication at The University of Texas-Pan American. Tim lives in Edinburg, Texas.
Robert Wolverton '85 is the owner of R. Anthony Development Group, a company that develops quality neighborhoods at affordable prices in Columbia, Mo. His business was recently named one of five outstanding small businesses in Columbia. Robert is on the board of directors for the Central Missouri Development Council and also the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He and Christi Sergent Wolverton '88 reside in Columbia.
Jody Jensen Shaffer '86 authored a book entitled Freezing, Wheezing, Sneezing Weasels. It won third place in the children's writing and illustrating contest of smartwriters.com. Jody and her family reside in Liberty, Mo.
Sarah Scott Cool '87 opened Kafe Kiskeya in the northeast section of Kansas City. It is also an art gallery and bookstore with connections to Haiti and the Haitian people.
1990s
Tina Cantrell Altum '90 received her Master's degree in secondary education from Wayland Baptist University. Tina and her family reside in Hale Center, Texas.
Jacque Weirich Stouffer '90 accepted a position as director of foundation relations in the Office of Institutional Advancement at William Jewell College.
Shara Clevenger Brice '91 started the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders in 1996 as a community outreach of the Ascension Church Centre, Custom House, from London, England. There are 11,000 cheerleaders throughout Britain and the Ascension Eagle Cheerleading squad represented England at the 2007 Cheerleading World Championship in Orlando, Fla. They took home seven trophies including the Grand Champions for the competition. Shara and her family live in Essex, England.
Laurie Peters Rempel '91, her husband, Sheldon, and their four children are missionaries with Avant Ministries. They had been working in Mali, West Africa, and have recently been assigned to Paris.
Suzanne O'Dell McCanles '93 was named Head of School at Oakhill Day School in Gladstone, Mo.
Chris Cissell '94 was named the new director in charge of youth development programs for the Kansas City Wizards soccer team. Chris will continue in his position as head coach for both the men and women's soccer teams at Jewell.
Jake Stratman '97 earned his Ph.D. in English from Marquette University in Milwaukee and accepted a position as assistant professor of English at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.
Matthew Myers '98, a Lieutenant in the Navy, was selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He will complete a Master's degree in National Security Studies.
Kara Coleman Bruning '99 completed her residency at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and is now a pediatrician at McGreevy Clinic Avera in Sioux Falls, S.D.
2000s
J.D. Gravina '00 was named head women's baseball coach at Quincy University in Quincy, Ill.
Jananne "Nan" Frohman Fiebig '01 accepted a position as a resident director of student life at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. Jeremy Fiebig '03 received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Shakespeare with a directing emphasis and has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of theatre at Waldorf College.
Craig Masters '01 earned his Ph.D. in physics and mathematics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and accepted a tenure-track appointment in the mathematics department at Kansas Wesleyan University. Craig and Heidi Charles Masters '04 reside in Salina, Kan.
Justin Gross '02 is attending the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia.
Kari Baumgartner Martin '02 graduated from medical school at the University of Missouri. She will begin her residency in dermatology this summer.
Amanda Butler '03 graduated summa cum laude from O'More College of Design in Franklin, Tenn. with a bachelor of fine arts in visual communication. She is currently the senior designer at Cold Tree Press, an independent self-publisher outside of Nashville.
Troy Hawkins '03 was selected by the faculty of the department of biological sciences at Purdue University for the H. E. Umbarger Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Research.
Heather Steele Mousa '03 received the Steven Kudravi Memorial Award for outstanding teaching assistant, teaching introductory biology courses with excellence for the department of biology at Georgia State University.
Rebecca Beaman '04 works in the telemetry unit at North Kansas City (Mo.) Hospital and is also pursuing her Master's degree in nursing at University of Missouri – Kansas City.
Greg Bohner '04 is pursuing his Master's degree in psychology and counseling at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He resides in Round Rock, Texas.
Adam Roske '04 competed in a martial arts competition, the International Sport Combat Federation World Classic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He made it to the championship round, ending with a 2-1 record. Adam is an art teacher in Lathrop, Mo., and is also an assistant coach for the middle school track and field team and assistant coach for the high school football team.
Sarah Burr '05 received her BS in nursing through the accelerated nursing program at Jewell.
Casey Barton '06 is a member of the Philadelphia Kixx, who won the Major Indoor Soccer League Championship this spring.
Chelsea Holmes '06 will lead the girls basketball programs at McAuley Catholic High School and also teach physical education at St. Mary's Elementary School and St. Peter's Junior High School, all in Joplin, Mo.
Jonathan Ponzer '06 and Heather Harrison Ponzer '06 accepted two-year positions with the Peace Corps and will be serving in Burkina Faso, a nation in West Africa.
Mark Brackman '07 was drafted in the 16th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft.
Abbey Patterson '07 has begun studying at Austin (Texas) Presbyterian Theological Seminary pursuing a Master's of Divinity degree.
