June 2006

In outdoor competition, the 100 meter men's record, long held by stellar Jewell track legend Clem Buschmann with a time of 10.84 set in 1963, was broken by Ike Nwabuonwu with a new record of 10.80.

In addition to the
breaking of Buschmann's record in the 100m, the team in the 4x100m relay of Austin Williams, Chris Glenn, Tim Bressman and Ike Nwabuonwu set a new record of 41.85, surpassing the previous record set in 2001 of 42.29. In the hammer throw, Brad Begemann set a new distance of 165' 4", surpassing the record set in 2005 by Joe Gray of 164' 7".

The women are also improving in outdoor competition. Alexandra (Alex) Braden broke her own record set last year of 68.47 with a new time of 67.71 in the 400m Hurdle. Amber Parker's time of 2:15.69 in the 800m run beat a record set by Tatiana Lange in 2000. In the 4x400m Relay and 4X800m Relay, the teams of Kendra Boswell, Jennifer Houston, Amber Parker and Lynda French and Alex Braden, Michaela Taylor, Sarah Rahal and Amber Parker beat times set in 2005 by some of these same team members.

In indoor competition, Brad Begemann's weight throw toss of 53' 11 ¾" beat his own record set in 2005. Nick Codutti's shot put length of 53' 1"
beat a record held by D. Brown of 50' 07" set in 1984.

A new category of the 1600m Race Walk broke the existing record with a new time of 10:38.91.

In indoor activity, it appears Jewell women are improving steadily with year-over-year success, with records being broken by some of the original record holders. Again, Alex Braden broke another of her previous records of 1:42.94 in the 600m dash, set in 2005, with a new record of 1:42.61. Kari Van Pelt's length in the weight throw of 46' 7.5" set in 2005 was broken by Meg Sauer with a toss of 53' 2 ¼" and Monica Silvey broke her own record set last year in the Pentathlon of 2,740 points with a new total of 2,751.
