SENIOR
FACULTY/STAFF RETIREMENTS
It has been said that "Time waits
for no man," and that must certainly
be true as a significant amount of
William Jewell College history is
leaving "the Hill" due to
the retirement or resignation of faculty
and staff. The majority of those departing
have seen the evolution of the College
throughout the years and have figured
prominently in the lives of many Jewell
students. Dr. John Westlie, Vice President
of Academic Affairs and Dean of the
College, said, "The value of
a superior liberal arts education
experienced by our students is built
upon the strength of the college faculty.
These men and women are distinguished
representatives of a noble and ancient
profession. As teachers, scholars,
mentors and community builders, they
have led our

with
a common purpose to develop a new generation
of leaders."
Ruth Anderson, Director of Bookstore/Central
Services
"It will be hard to leave my friends
and colleagues. . . I will really miss the
daily interaction with the students. Jewell
has been the very best possible place to
spend my career and I have been richly blessed
to spend 30 years doing a job I loved with
the best people anywhere."
Mary Ellen Bleakley, Professor of
Education
"In 29 years, there has never been
a day without rewards and/or challenges.
I will miss both. It has been fun to work
with college students and I have enjoyed
seeing them work with children in the schools.
It has been great to see former Jewell students
as teachers now helping our current students."
Sandy Jo Burke, Administrative Assistant
to the President, is leaving after
11 years, taking the position of Director
of Advancement Services at Columbia College
in South Carolina.
Ken Chatlos, Oxbridge Professor of
History and Chairman, Department of History

again from 1969 to 2006 for a total of 41
years of service.
Nancy Durden, Administrative Associate,
Department of Music
"One of the highlights of my job is
being surrounded by our students and watching
them grow from first-year students to graduates
. . . priceless! I also enjoy working with
our incredible music faculty. Jewell has
played a significant role throughout most
of my adult life and I will always stay
connected to this campus." Nancy is
leaving after 11 years at WJC.
Ronilue Garrison, Professor of Education
"I can think of no job more important
than preparing the next generation of teachers
for America's youth. As a professor, it
is all about the students; they inspire
me, motivate me and challenge me. I will
miss them but will remember them with great
fondness." 30 years at WJC, four as
a student and 26 years as a professor.
Truett Mathis, Associate Professor
of Mathematics
With many memories of life on the WJC campus,
the one Mr. Mathis says he has enjoyed is
"the best view in the world, looking
out my office window, to the east and watching
the sun rise every morning." Mr. Mathis
has been at WJC for 37 years.
Ardi Sharp, Administrative Assistant
