SUMMER SINGER-ACTOR INSTITUTE
"The purpose of the Institute is to provide advanced singing and acting training for young singers who are planning careers in the world of opera or musical theatre," said Dr. Ron Witzke, Director of Opera and voice professor at William Jewell. "The focus of instruction will be dramatic interpretation in performance, including the communication of foreign languages, and the challenges of using the body, face and eyes with expressive freedom."
A maximum of 40 high school and college undergraduate singers (ages 16-21) who have had private vocal study will be admitted to the Institute. The cost is $195, including private lessons, master classes, accompanists, an Institute t-shirt and seven meals (Sunday evening through Tuesday evening). Campus housing is available for an additional $20 per night. A $50 deposit is required with the application and will be returned if enrollment is closed. The balance of $145 must be postmarked by June 30. A waiting list will be established if necessary.
Faculty members for the Institute include baritone Dan Belcher, WJC '92, internationally acclaimed opera singer and star of the PBS Great Performances production of "Angels In America"; Kathleen Smith Belcher, assistant stage director at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City; mezzo-soprano Sarah Taylor Holman, WJC '84, Director of Opera and voice professor at Wheaton College Conservatory; and bass-baritone Ron Witzke. The schedule includes 2 ˝ days of public and private performances, intensive training in vocal technique, refining of dramatic interpretation, language and diction study, and vocal health and hygiene.
Institute participants may also apply to receive two private, 30-minute lessons by submitting a CD recording with two songs. Those applying for the limited private lessons must submit the CD with their application and deposit postmarked by June 1. Selected applicants will be informed of the faculty's decision.
Applications with deposits should be mailed to William Jewell College Singer-Actor Institute, 500 College Hill, Campus Box 1128, Liberty, MO 64068. For more information, contact Dr. Witzke at 816-415-7532, or witzker@william.jewell.edu.
