Woman's Committee Active at WJC; Scholarships Awarded

The William Jewell College Woman's Committee, which is comprised of alumni, mothers of students and friends dedicated to the mission of the college, continues an enduring tradition of service to the institution.

Formed in 1965 by a group of Liberty alumnae, Woman's Committee was initiated to provide a network of support for William Jewell College from women across the country. The committee quickly identified its role in funding scholarships for deserving women students and pursuing practical and aesthetic projects on campus, in addition to providing prayer support to the college.

Over the past 42 years, the organization has awarded well over 100 scholarships to Jewell women. In its efforts to enhance the cultural and aesthetic aspects of campus life, the committee has carried out a variety of projects, including planting trees on campus and providing artwork for the post-tornado renovation of Melrose Hall. Projects undertaken at the President's Home include a post-tornado project to purchase large planters for the front porch, in the wake of the century tree devastation. A Hospitality Shower for the home has provided service items such as linens, glassware, china and silver for entertaining guests at the house. Mary Sallee, on behalf of the President's Home, has gratefully accepted heirloom pieces of crystal and silver that are used many times during a year of entertaining.

A long-term project undertaken by the Woman's Committee, the First Ladies' Gallery, is being reinstalled in the newly-renovated Yates-Gill College Union. Portraits of the women who have served the campus as First Lady have been researched, sought from descendents of the former Presidents' families and framed for display.

The Woman's Committee maintains a membership of about 200 members, with over 100 of those being Lifetime members. The Woman's Committee meets on campus twice a year, in fall and spring. Dues for a regular member are $10 per year; $25 a year for a Patron membership; and $100 for Lifetime membership. Scholarships awarded at recent meeting; program provided by two students "Embracing the Jewell Journey"

At the April 14th meeting of Woman's Committee, two current Jewell students continued the general program theme "Embracing the Jewell Journey." Each has made a significant impact on the college campus and the world. Both were introduced as women of character and integrity whose journey has embraced all facets of campus life and helped prepare them for a remarkable future.

Scarlett Savage, an Oxbridge: Molecular Biology major and Bioethics minor, plans to pursue a degree in medicine and enter the field of Public Health. In planning to delay medical school for another year, she has accepted a position at Stowers Institute, a prestigious research institution in Kansas City.

Rachel Sheffield put leadership skills she has honed on the Jewell campus to the test while on a mission trip to a Middle Eastern country. War broke out and Rachel was not able to leave the country right away. With other missionaries, including career families, Rachel spent two weeks awaiting evacuation in one apartment, where Rachel put her natural interests and gifts to good use entertaining and distracting seven young children.

Woman's Committee awarded three $1,000 scholarships to Jewell women who had completed a thorough application and interview process that included a narrative of future plans to make a difference in their community and goals for their personal and professional lives. The three scholarship recipients were introduced: Lucy Akins, a nursing major; Krista Bartelsmeyer, a Political Science major; and Debra Bowman, a Physical Education and Psychology major.

All friends of Jewell are invited to the Woman's Committee programs held in the Fall and Spring. In addition to updates on current projects that support the campus, each meeting offers an opportunity to hear brilliant Jewell women offer insight into how they have embraced their college journey and how it has helped shape them for their next adventures.
