Jewell Students Work on Habitat Build near Biloxi, Miss.
By Erica Ashburn, Student Ministry Intern

The devastation that is still along the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts a year and a half after Hurricane Katrina hit is overwhelming. It was a privilege to accompany seven students and represent William Jewell College in the continuing relief effort. With three workdays and one day of sightseeing, the trip was a great experience. The work that we were able to do with the other volunteers was amazing. We started with a concrete slab and by the time we left we were putting up the roof trusses so that other volunteers could put on the roof!

We had an opportunity to go into New Orleans and see first-hand the devastation of the city. We were amazed how empty the city still was and how many neighborhoods have to be completely leveled before anyone can ever move back. We saw people, block after block, still living in trailers in their front yard. It served as a reminder that it was not just New Orleans, but the entire Mississippi and Louisiana coasts that were affected.

If there was one thing that we could “shout from the mountain tops” about this trip it would be “Please do not forget the people of the Gulf Coast!” It is easy for us to watch the news, hear the updates and participate in the political finger pointing but we must remember all the lives that were totally swept away by Katrina. There is still so much that needs to be done. Please continue to pray for the people of the Gulf Coast area. The storm may be gone, but the rebuilding of so many lives has only just begun.
