Sorority Complex Site & Greek Common Plans Revealed

Alumni and friends of William Jewell College gathered at Homecoming to dedicate the site of what will be the new Sorority Complex and Greek Common on the campus. The site is familiar as it was formerly the Regent's Quad married student housing complex that was destroyed by the tornado of 2003.

The rationale for this new facility can be found in the College's Greek Strategic Plan and Campus Housing Master Plan. The Greek Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance for Jewell's female students to have the opportunity to enrich their college experience through self-directed, responsible community living in a modern campus residential setting specifically designed to meet the goals of their organizations.

All sorority chapters assisted with the site dedication, including the women of Alpha Gamma Delta pictured with sorority chapter advisor, Hanna Dobberstine '66
Plans call for each sorority-Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta and Zeta Tau Alpha-to have its own house connected to the Greek Common building. The sorority houses will offer suite-style accommodations with semi-private bathrooms for 32 residents on the first and second floors. All the houses will be completely ADA compliant with easy access to all facilities including elevators to the residential area and suites. Each house will also include chapter rooms, social lounges and modern amenities.

The Greek Common will serve as a "command center" for Greek Life on the Jewell campus and will be a center for activities like IFC/Panhellenic meetings, lectures on women's issues,
recruitment/rush events and all Greek meetings. The Common includes a fitness center for women, private study rooms, modern laundry facilities and lounges.

The inaugural donor to the Sorority Complex project is beloved Jewell professor and alumna Dr. Georgia Bowman, who made a gift by donating the proceeds of the sale of her Liberty home.

The College has made a substantial commitment to the $10 million project and must raise $4.5 million to open the facility in 2010. Significant recognition opportunities for family members, mentors, sorority sisters and donors are available within each Sorority House and Common area.
