Colloquium Day Spotlights Undergraduate Research

William Jewell College, which has honored outstanding academic achievement since its founding more than 150 years ago, will showcase student research during the sixth annual David Nelson Duke Undergraduate Colloquium on April 19. The traditional course schedule is suspended for the day so students from all academic
disciplines may present their scholarly works to faculty, staff and the community at large. Colloquium celebrates the involvement of undergraduates in research, which William Jewell College believes to be a hallmark of an excellent liberal arts college.

The Colloquium is designed to acquaint undergraduates with the process and academic rigors of presenting research, creative projects or performances in a scholarly manner. Additionally, the Colloquium stimulates collaboration between students and their faculty.

The Colloquium is named for Dr. David Nelson Duke (1950-2000), who joined William Jewell's religion faculty in 1980. Over his 20-year career at Jewell, Dr. Duke proved himself as theologian, scholar, teacher and social advocate. His articles and books, community activism, collegiality and passion for life made naming the Undergraduate Colloquium in his memory a natural choice.

This year's Colloquium chairpersons, Dr. Jane Woodruff and Dr. Fred Spletstoser, note that "The Duke Colloquium offers a great opportunity to celebrate scholarship on our campus. The entire college community looks forward to this annual Jewell event."

Alumni and friends of William Jewell College are invited to attend Colloquium events. The locations for the student presentations will be posted in the Gano Chapel foyer on April 19.
