Fraters,
I never intended to be Greek.
I pledged at Indiana University the second semester of my sophomore year, after spending a year and a half sampling what the Hoosier Greek system had to offer, and finding it wanting. I was settling into a dorm/apartment lifestyle, when my roommate told me that he was going over to the TKE house for dinner, and they told him to bring a friend. "Tekes, huh? I haven't been there before."
My undergraduate experience was stellar. I loved college so much that my wife jokes wryly that I decided to never leave. Although I have never worked for the International Fraternity, I have had opportunities that very few TKE alumni have had. As a career-long
information technology staff member at several universities, I have been in the |

right place at the right time. Twice. I've helped to re-charter two Top Teke chapters (Gamma at the University of Illinois and Beta-Chi at Southern Illinois University Carbondale).
I can personally attest that the money I give to the TKE Educational Foundation and the legacy that it brings is well used. I directly see its positive effects on the undergraduates. Few universities teach leadership in the substantive way that the TKE Leadership Academy does.
That is why donating to the TEF is important. Few other fraternities give opportunities to join to the academically talented who come from modest means, and then give scholarship opportunities to help give those members a leg up. That is why donating to the TEF is important. Few other fraternities create the kind of chapter-based scholarship opportunities that the TKE Life Loyal program does. That is why donating to the TEF is important.
I recently gathered and framed all the small composites from all the years I've been a volunteer, and from all the TKE chapters I've been associated with. I hung them on the wall of my office. I'm stunned at the number of young men that TKE has positively influenced and shaped.
Engineers, doctors, lawyers, dentists, politicians, and yes - information technology staff members at universities.
The lessons I learned through Tau Kappa Epsilon influenced my life then and influence the lives of many young men today. That's why I donate to the TKE Educational Foundation. Especially because I never intended to be Greek.
