I hope you are as encouraged as I am by the many wonderful ways that God is using your gifts in His harvest fields. That's one of the main reasons we produce the Harvest newsletter you are reading right now. We want you to know that your generous gifts to this ministry are truly making an impact in lives around the world.

But there is another--and equally important--reason for this publication. It's to help you pray more effectively for the people and ministries of SIM. There is no weapon more powerful for advancing the gospel, nor any defense so sure against the attacks of the devil, than prayer.

Africa Bible Commentary Receives Widespread Attention
Since its release in July, the Africa Bible Commentary has enjoyed considerable attention both in Africa and
abroad. Written by Africans for Africans, the commentary uses local proverbs and folklore to help interpret the Bible. It is proving to be a powerful tool to help pastors, students, and lay leaders understand Scripture and apply it accurately to everyday life. Thanks to your support, the commentary is now being translated into other languages with the French edition expected to be completed in 2007.

How beautiful . . . are the feet of those who bring good news. --Isaiah 52:7

Many of Nigeria’s national missionaries work among Muslims and unreached people groups in areas where schools are inadequate or nonexistent. Consequently, many missionary children have grown up without receiving quality instruction.

But now, thanks to generous gifts from friends like you, SIM sponsors a school in Nigeria that provides these missionary children with a safe, loving environment and a good education.

But one of those children, Abner, had little hope for a prosperous future even with a good education. Polio had crippled him at age 7. No longer able to walk, Abner crawled for the next seven years of his life. Despite his disability, however, Abner did well in school and was popular among his fellow students.
Thankful for God's grace in allowing him to regain the ability to walk, Abner wants to become a missionary pastor when he grows up.
Abner also captured the hearts of visiting missionaries from the United States. God gave them great compassion for Abner, and through their efforts, Abner was admitted to an orthopedic hospital in Kano in August 2005.

For the next several months, Abner endured painful therapies, never knowing for sure what the outcome would be. Yet Abner remained positive and thankful. He made friends with the other patients, and everyone loved him.

SIM is actively involved with the work of more than 25 schools in 20 countries.
Ato Berhanu* had been in his house for an unusually long time. Although the neighbors were concerned, they did not visit him. They were afraid. They suspected that Berhanu had AIDS.

Fortunately, Abebech*, a volunteer from SIM's Medan Center, became aware of Berhanu's situation. She went to his house and found him bedridden with no one to help him. His wife had died six years ago, and his 16-year-old son was away at school.

Abebech washed him, prepared food, cleaned his house, and took him to Medan for an HIV test. He tested positive, so she took him to a government hospital--carrying him on her back when he was too weak to walk. After receiving anti-AIDS drugs, they returned to his home where Abebech continues to visit, cook, and clean for Berhanu.

When you scatter the seeds of the gospel by sending it across radio waves, you never know how far the message will reach or how many lives it will touch--until someone comes to thank you.

Such was the case with our Guarani radio ministry in Paraguay. As SIM missionary Christie Reich was preparing to leave her home, she heard a knock on her door. Seeing an unfamiliar woman there, Christie immediately assumed she wanted money, food, or maybe help for a sick child. As Christie spoke to her, however, she learned that this young mother named Maria had traveled for four hours simply to say thank you for the Guarani radio ministry!
