Part-time Profits

Would you like to make more money? Meet new people? Further develop your skills and talents? Fill your downtime with something fun to do? Well, listen up - because I have your answer!

Summertime is ideal for picking up a second job.

Now I know what you’re thinking. The idea of another job, albeit part-time, is hardly appealing. And it’s easy to list excuses. You’re already exhausted from the daily grind. You have vacation plans set for July. You might move in August. What good would adding a part-time job do? Here’s a list of the top five reasons you should consider part-time employment, compiled oh-so-expertly by me and a bunch of my friends:

1. Supplement your income. Hopefully the 9-5 gig pays bills, rent, debt, etc. Earn a little disposable income to finance your fun. Wait tables or tend bar, and save your tips! Mow a few lawns and soon you'll notice that the green piling up isn't only in piles of mulch. It's in your hands, too!
2. Work for perks. Sure, the extra moolah is nice. But you know what's even nicer? Earning that money as a lifeguard and picking up a nice, even suntan. Or enjoying free concerts while serving on a security team. Work retail someplace like Barnes & Noble or Best Buy and take advantage of enviable employee discounts! Consider the benefits a part-time job might bring that aren't necessarily monetary.
3. Make your part-time job work for you. Especially if your full-time job isn't fulfilling, use this part-time opportunity as a stepping stone toward bigger and better things. Hone your interpersonal skills by taking on a job that puts you in front of people, like a tour guide. Sharpen your computer skills by becoming an apprentice to a web developer. Discover a nocturnal niche for science and work as a lab technician. Or launch a side business and alter your career path forever!
4. Acquire acquaintances. The easiest way to make new friends is in a safe environment where both of you are focused on a specific activity. Since you can't rely on the structure of school anymore, you might discover new friendships can be nurtured in the workplace. Since part-time jobs are usually more relaxed in nature, now is the perfect chance for you to meet some new people and share a laugh or two. Call up your local parks department and ask about seasonal job opportunities. Or banter with your fellow baristas as you schlep java to loyal junkies.
5. There's nothing good on TV anyway. Your favorite shows are on hiatus. Surely a part-time job is better than watching reruns of Full House on Nick at Nite.. Well, maybe.
