Witnessing Fitness

It's the New Year. And like many people, I've resolved to become more physically fit. In fact, I just got back from the gym. (I joined back in November so I'd be somewhat of a "regular" by the time newbies sporting spandex and iPods swarmed in this month.)

I've grown accustomed to putting my time in on the treadmill. Today I was not alone. On one side of me were two chatty college students. On the other, a stoic-looking bald man was engrossed in the rerun of Law & Order showing on the small gym's only TV. With limited opportunity for conversation - and an increased running speed that wouldn't have facilitated it anyhow - I was in good shape to stand tall and observe my fellow gym-goers. Here are three important lessons I learned while witnessing fitness in action:


  1. Not all twentysomethings are slackers. Playing a guessing game with myself, I conjectured more than half of the people surrounding me were in their twenties. Like me, they each made the decision to leave work and come work out. A Colin Firth look-a-like was toning his triceps. The gentleman whom I refer to in my brain as Tommy Tiptoes was starting a strength training regimen. The brother-sister twins (with matching sweatbands) were racing against one another on the rowing machines. It's amazing to think each person was working toward a goal to better himself/herself in some way.
  2. Exercising is a great way to meet people. Think about it. You're never at a loss for conversation starters. "Can I work in on that machine?" "Can you believe we actually pay to come here and sweat?" "I see you here every day!" Investigating. Commiserating. Motivating. Of course, this same phenomenon occurs outside the gym as well. It's easy to inquire where a girl bought her running shoes or to ask a guy to join in your game of basketball. This year, join with me in strengthening your "social muscle" and make some new friends!
  3. Exercising improves more than just your physical health. All around me, people were oozing endorphins. Clearly exhausted, they still mustered the energy to complete their routines with great vigor. And they'll be back to do it all over again tomorrow!

This year, commit to get fit. Check out the gyms available in your area, and don't forget the YMCA! Look into your local school district or community center to see if health and fitness classes are offered. Toss a Frisbee at the park, walk your dog, or explore some trails. Every small step counts toward creating a happier and healthier you! Happy 2007!
