Fraternity Continues Anti-Hazing Campaign; Launches New Programs
 |
As the only Fraternity founded in direct opposition to hazing, Sigma Nu is proud to continue its campaign to eradicate hazing.
In advance of National Hazing Prevention Week (September 22-26), Regent Joe |
Gilman (Morehead State) sent a special anti-hazing message to all of Sigma Nu's collegiate chapters and colonies. To view that message, please click here.
This month, the Fraternity also launched three exciting new prevention education programs in support of the campaign's honorable goal.
GreekLifeEdu
| Sigma Nu's more than 8,000 collegiate members now have access to GreekLifeEdu, a new online prevention education program tailored specifically to the needs of Greek student members. The interactive program |
 |
focuses on alcohol consumption, hazing and sexual assault and is designed to help our collegiate Brothers make safer and healthier decisions.
Modeled on the very successful AlcoholEdu program, GreekLifeEdu presents non-opinionated, science-based content in an easily accessible, online format. Surveys, knowledge tests and interactive exercises create a highly engaging experience.
 |
At the urging of Sigma Nu and other leading Greek organizations, GreekLifeEdu was developed earlier this year by Outside The Classroom, Inc., specifically for Greek college students. "We are delighted to continue our partnership with Outside The Classroom," said Executive Director Brad Beacham. "Outside the Classroom has become the recognized leader in prevention education programs that work. We are fortunate to now have their expertise applied to the fight against hazing."

Response Ability: Transforming Values Into Action
This year, each of Sigma Nu's 184 collegiate chapters and colonies will be invited to participate in a hazing prevention program based upon a new video project: Response Ability: Transforming Values Into Action.
| The video and facilitated discussion that follows are designed to address the "bystander" effect in hazing cultures. In many instances, hazing is perpetrated by only a small minority of members in a student organization. Other members of the organization – often the majority – |
 |
who recognize that hazing should not occur and are personally opposed to it, unfortunately refuse or fail to take action to prevent or stop the hazing. This program is designed to specifically reach those members, or "bystanders."
The program seeks to educate and empower collegiate members to understand what they can – and must – do to prevent hazing in their own chapter. "We could eliminate hazing tomorrow, if every one of our collegiate Brothers would stand up for Sigma Nu's values," said Regent Joe Gilman (Morehead State). "This program is a call to action. We are asking every Brother to accept responsibility to stamp out hazing. Doing so is part of the voluntary oath each of us has given to The Legion of Honor."
The video and program were produced by the Greek Video Consortium, of which Sigma Nu is a founding member. Sigma Nu was the first men's Greek organization to sponsor the Response Ability project and encouraged all others to join in the vital effort. Response Ability was produced by Sigma Nu alumnus Mike Dilbeck (TCU), owner of Beck & Company in Chicago.

LEAD Program
Sigma Nu's award-winning LEAD Program is the Fraternity's front-line alternative to hazing. Phase I of the Program is designed specifically to educate and prepare candidate members.
This fall, Phase I will be accessible in an interactive, online format, available to all collegiate chapters and members. This format will allow students access to a self- |
 |
paced program component that complements chapter-based activities.
All three of these programs are made possible by alumni contributions to the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation.
