. . . that a cash gift can cost you more?

Discover the Joy of Giving Without Using Cash

When thinking about making a charitable gift to an organization that has touched your heart, like the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, Inc., a gift of cash might immediately come to mind. But, professional advisors agree that cash is not always the most efficient asset to donate.

Eta Mu Whistles Into History

(August 19-22, 1964) Standing at the podium during the 41st Grand Chapter in New Orleans, La., Executive Secretary Richard R. Fletcher (Penn State) proudly presents a set of door chimes to be used at the Headquarters Shrine in Lexington, Va. What once used to be limited to the melodic whistles of Sigma Nu members passing each other on the street, will now welcome all visitors to the Rock.

A Moment in Time

Charles Valan (Mount Union) spent only a few months in the Sigma Nu chapter at Mount Union College. It was just enough time to go through his candidacy and initiation before an illness in his family had him transferring to a college that was closer to home. It was enough time, however, for Valan to form a bond with Sigma Nu and his fraternity brothers that would last a lifetime.

In 1983, while he was still in college, Valan made his first

contribution to the Sigma Nu Foundation. He gave this gift in memory of Michael Hardy (Mount Union), a chapter brother who was killed in a drunk-driving accident after Valan left campus. He learned of Hardy’s death in a letter from one of his fellow Sigma Nu brothers shortly after it happened, and he remembers the impact it had on him. "Michael wasn’t my pledge brother or big brother, but he was a nice guy who was fun to be around." So every year, for the last 23 years, Valan has made a contribution to the Foundation in memory of Hardy. "I do it so the brothers don’t forget, and so that I won’t forget either. It’s a reminder to me of how precious life is."
Returning Home. . . Celebrating 50 years in Flushing, Mich.

On October 7th and 8th, the men of Delta Chi Rho (now known as the Eta Mu Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity) will be returning home. . . at least for the weekend. And, in honor of the 50 years this combined group of men has occupied their beloved chapter home in Flushing, Mich., it certainly looks like they will have cause to celebrate.

Purchased in January 1956, the former Murray Dailey family residence had its fair share of Delta Chi Rho initiates before the local group became affiliated with Sigma Nu Fraternity in 1963. And, although the physical structure has undergone significant changes over the years, it has always remained an important symbol of pride for both the men of Delta Chi Rho and Sigma Nu’s Eta Mu chapter.
Hammond Joins Director of Development Team

After three years on the Fraternity’s staff, Russ Hammond (James Madison) recently joined the Foundation as one of three Directors of Development. Their role: to travel the country and build relationships with alumni who have graduated in the last decade. The "Graduates of the Last Decade" or GOLD program has already achieved tremendous success in drawing support for the Fraternity’s educational programs from younger alumni.

Hammond is excited about his new role with the Foundation and looks forward to helping educate
alumni about the exceptional programming Sigma Nu offers its undergraduate members. Oftentimes, he says, alumni don’t realize Sigma Nu offers some of the best leadership training in the country for fraternity members. "When they learn about it, they are encouraged to contribute," he comments.
Greek Legislative Action Alert - Your Assistance Needed!

We need your help! On Wednesday, September 27, the Greek world is conducting a "Phone March" on Capitol Hill to bolster Congressional support for the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (H.R. 1548/S. 713). From 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern that day, we are asking Greek members from across the country to
call their legislators to ask for support of this Act, which is legislation that will help preserve and enhance not-for-profit student housing options.

We need as many members of Congress as possible to support this legislative initiative, and your phone call will make a difference! Show Capitol Hill how important this legislation is to you, and to the Greek community nationwide, by participating in this effort. . .
