The Checkered Flag Drops on the 500 by INDY Campaign

And the winner is. . . Sigma Nu! On May 20, 2005, the green flag was waved and the 500 by Indy campaign began. The goal was to gain 500 first-time donors by the close of the 62nd Grand Chapter on July 19, 2006. We are pleased to announce the Foundation garnered 623 first-time donors in this time frame, exceeding the goal by 25%!

Making a Brother’s Dream a Reality

Eric McClure (Alabama-Huntsville) has the opportunity of a lifetime to pursue his dream as a professional race car driver. What’s it going to take? Probably just a little help from his brothers. With a great opportunity on the horizon, and just a few weeks remaining, every Sigma Nu can help this young man achieve his dream.

In "American Idol" fashion, Sigma Nus from across the country can vote for

Brother McClure to have a shot on a new reality TV show called Racin’ for a Livin’. The show, which will air on a prime-time network and be distributed internationally, will allow viewers to see and experience the high intensity world of auto racing through the eyes and mind of the driver. They will take rookie unknown race car drivers from all across the country, train them next to veteran drivers and pit them against each other for a chance at a 2007 contract to race in the NASCAR Busch Grand National division, the series just below the NASCAR Nextel Cup. This is every racer’s dream.

It all began for McClure, a junior Human Resources major, when he started racing at the age of 14 at Huntsville Speedway. It was only natural for him to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather who raced there in the 70s. "I grew up watching NASCAR and local racing as my grandparents wondered when it would be my turn. Racing is much more than a hobby for me; it’s a way of life. Once I got behind the wheel of my first stock car at the age of 14, I was hooked," recalls McClure.

From Hoosiers to Longhorns: Grand Chapter Travels to the Lone Star State

It’s official…the next time our Grand Chapter meets we’ll be convening in the great city of Austin, Texas, the live music capital of the world! Quirky and far from ordinary, it's the kind of place where you check your worries at the city limits, trade in suits for something a bit more casual and prepare for experiences you can find only in Texas.

But, before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a moment to recognize our newly elected High Council members and the numerous major award winners announced last week in Indianapolis, IN. (We’ve got the next two years to get you ready for Austin!)

Congressman Roger F. Wicker presents the 2006 Maddox Honor Lecture

United States Congressman Roger F. Wicker (Mississippi) presented the 2006 Maddox Honor Lecture during the opening session of the 62nd Grand Chapter held earlier this month in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1988, Dr. Robert N. Maddox (Arkansas) established the Maddox Honor Lecture series though a gift to the Educational Foundation. Here is an excerpt from the 53rd Grand Chapter transcript of Dr. Maddox introducing the inaugural lecture.

The Sigma Nu Creed talks of Love, Truth and Honor. The Initiation Ceremony talks only of Honor. Have you ever thought about why? My opinion is that the first Initiation Ceremony was written by

U.S. Congressman Roger F. Wicker (Mississippi)
Founder Hopkins, and subsequent writers, including myself, have tried to stay true to his work. Every initiate of Sigma Nu swears on his Honor that he will do certain things. Our fraternity is called the Legion of Honor. Every person would have a different definition for Honor but my dictionary defines it:

HONOR - One's word given as a guarantee of performance.

Bid for Brotherhood a Huge Success

A great time was had by all who attended the inaugural Bid for Brotherhood (B4B) live and silent auction. The B4B was held on July 14, 2006, in conjunction with the 62nd Grand Chapter. James Owens, Executive Vice President stated, "As our first auction of this type, we really did not know how many people to plan for or what to expect. The Committee had established a goal of raising $10,000 and having 100 alumni attend the event."

The Foundation was pleasantly surprised when over 170 alumni and guests attended. The emcee, Brother Pat Shoulders (Indiana), and the auctioneer, Brother Boyd Allison (Old Dominion), were a dynamic duo . . .
