July 2005
Virgil Whatley "Duff" Duffie Jr., born in Greenwood, S.C., September 10, 1935, joined Sigma Nu's Chapter Eternal on Thursday, June 30, 2005. He was 69.

In 1954, Brother Duffie was initiated into the Delta Chapter at the University of South Carolina. He served as Commander from 1955-1956 and was president of his class and the student government. He was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for excellence by the
University. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1959 .

Virgil Duffie served as vice president and trust officer of Bankers Trust and NCNB and served on Gov. Carroll Campbell's cabinet as the State's first director of the
Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Upon his retirement in 2000, he was presented the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest civilian award, by Gov. David Beasley. He also was a lifetime supporter, director and counselor at Palmetto Boys State for more than 25 years.

To say that Brother Duff was liked by the students would be an understatement. His sense of humor and genuine caring for the collegians made him loved by generations of Sigma Nus. While Regent, Brother Duffie visited 112 Sigma Nu chapters. In 1986, Brother Duffie was bestowed Sigma Nu's highest honor, induction into the Sigma Nu Hall of Honor.

Brother Duffie gave generously of his time to Sigma Nu. Since 1961, he has served continuously as a volunteer for the Fraternity and/or the Educational Foundation. He served as Division Commander from 1961-1968, Chapter Advisor from 1963-1965, Grand Councilman from 1968-1972, Vice Regent from 1972-1974, Regent from 1974-1976 and the Board of Trustees from 1974-1980 and 1984-1997. Since 1992 he served on the Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

"Duff was the youngest Regent in the "history of Sigma Nu. He was known as the 'Collegiate Regent' and beloved by everyone. His example of leadership has been inspiring, his contributions to our Fraternity incalculable. Not only has Sigma Nu lost a great leader, I'm sure that many others feel as I do, I've lost a mentor and a personal friend." said James C. Cherry, Regent from 1990-1992, Member of the Hall of Honor and Past President and Chairman of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation.

Virgil Duffie was married to the late Mary Hartzog Duffie. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Michael Penland of Columbia; daughter Page Duffie; son and daughter-in-law Virgil W. "Chip" and Ashley Brown Duffie; brother and sister-in-law Walter Duffie and Tanis Duffie; and granddaughters Caroline and Anna Penland.

Memorials can be made to the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation.
