Life
Lessons from the Herd
Creator of the canine superstar Benji, Joe Camp (Mississippi) loves animals. In the midst of a funk that followed the floundering premiere of his fourth Benji movie, Joe had no idea that his passion to understand the heart of another kind of animal would not only fuel the freedom from his sulking, but also take his career in an entirely new direction.
Joe's journey with horses began with a gift. As a surprise for his birthday,
his wife Kathleen had scheduled a trail ride for the two of them. They'd been
talking about horses ever since they moved into their country home in northeast
San Diego County. They would sit on the front porch and look down along one side
of their property where there were three horse stalls. Sipping glasses of wine
at sunset, they'd chat about how nice it would be to have a few horses meandering
around those stalls... like a picture postcard, they'd say.
Two weeks after their first trail ride, Joe and Kathleen owned three horses. |

Beta
Rho Brothers Run for Autism Awareness
| In
early April, a Beta Rho alumnus dropped
by the chapter house hoping to recruit
a few brothers to participate in an
upcoming event. Jim Gillespie (Penn),
class of ‘79, says he knew it
was "a shot in the dark." Unfortunately,
he showed up at the house at an inopportune
time; the brothers were in the middle
of a chapter meeting, and no one
was available to speak with him. |

He slid a note under the door about the April 20th Penn Relays Distance Classic,
a 5K race in which he and his family and friends were participating for the second
year on behalf of "Autism Speaks." Jim’s 14-year old son Brendan
has autism, and the family has become active in advocacy, awareness and fundraising
efforts for the cause. Because April is Autism Awareness Month, they chose the
already popular Penn Relays as part of their effort to build interest and awareness
around campus and the community.
Brother Josh Eisenberg (Penn) found Jim’s note at the house and responded
with an energetic offer to help. "We’re interested. What do you need
and when do you need it," asked Josh. Knowing that volume and visibility
would play a big role in getting them noticed, Jim quickly responded asking Josh
to field a team of Sigma Nus to participate in the 5K, wearing blue Autism Speaks
T-shirts.

Epsilon Mu's Scholarship Program Breeds
Success
Six
years ago, a group of dedicated alumni took
their vision for a "different kind of fraternity" and
re-colonized the Epsilon Mu Chapter at Butler
University. Alumni advisor Dick Thompson
(Butler) says, "We wanted to make the fraternity
different from what was already on campus." So,
they emphasized Sigma Nu's strong stance
against hazing and implemented grade point
average standards. To reward students for
academic excellence, they also began a scholarship
program, awarding grants to any student living
in the house who earns a 3.0 or better.
Despite caution from university officials,
the chapter has attracted successful students,
created an environment of care |
|
and
responsibility for Fraternity property, and they
have generously rewarded chapter brothers with
thousands of dollars to help advance their academic
interests and potential. Last spring, nine brothers
earned a 4.0, while the chapter boasted a GPA of
3.38, the highest they've ever attained. |
