Profile of a Donor: David Whitlaw Jr.

Thirty-six-year-old David Whitlaw (Theta Kappa, Georgia Southern) is Midwest district sales manager for SPI Dynamics, a leader in web application security assessment. David, and his wife, Lisa, live in Atlanta with their infant son, Christopher.

What are highlights of your collegiate Sigma Nu experience?

"I loved serving as rush chairman my senior year of college. I enjoyed meeting prospective members and selling them on the fraternity. It was a tough job, but one I loved. Before I could sell the new guys, I had to work with the current members so they could sell the chapter, too. At the time, we had the largest candidate class with 33 members. It's one of the most important jobs in the fraternity, and it was good preparation for what I do today.

"Next to meeting my wife, Lisa, being a member of Sigma Nu was the best thing that
David, Lisa, and Christopher
happened to me in college. Lisa was a little sister at the fraternity and enjoyed that experience so much she didn't rush a sorority. We have stayed close to many of our Sigma Nu friends and definitely feel it enhanced our college experience."

When did you begin contributing to Sigma Nu?

"Right out of college, I think as early as 1992 or 1993. I started out giving about $50 a year, and that has gradually increased as I have progressed in my job. I feel it is important not only to support my local chapter but the national fraternity, too. It is one of the most worthwhile organizations that Lisa and I contribute to."

What inspired you to increase your contributions in the past few years?

"I was commander of my alumni chapter from 1999 to 2001, and that brought me closer to the fraternity. I still serve on its executive committee and am part of a group that's helping to pay off the mortgage of the fraternity house at Georgia Southern.

"Three years ago I set up a monthly payment of $10 a month on my credit card. A few months later, I decided to give more and designated another monthly payment from an American Express card that earns frequent flier miles. I think it's easier to donate a set amount each month instead of writing one check a year. This way, I don't really miss the money, and Sigma Nu knows it can count on a regular cash flow from donors who give in this manner."

Why do you think it's important for alumni to support the Foundation?

"Sigma Nu is one of the strongest fraternities around and it's because of its national leadership. Members of other fraternities seem to stop their involvement after they graduate from college, but with Sigma Nu, you're a brother for life.

"Everybody can afford to give $10 a month, especially if they had a positive experience as a Sigma Nu. If you're disciplined with your finances, it's easy to do. Also, I think it's important for young alumni to get in the habit of giving. If you wait too long, you'll be at the back of the line, and I intend to be at the front."
