Olympic
Games 2012
In
support of New York City's bid for the Olympic Games
in 2012, Sigma Nu has partnered with NYC2012 as the
exclusive fraternity partner in their quest to
sign up over 60,000 volunteers. No Olympic Bid City
has ever attempted to recruit this many volunteers!

Did you know that it takes $7.71 to provide for one
minute of Sigma Nu's operations? That's right only $7.71
to give our undergraduate members leadership training,
scholarship assistance, and educational programs that
are without equal in the Greek community. Sigma Nu serves
over 8000 undergraduates on almost 200 college and university
campuses every day. That's less than $1.40 per student
per day!

Makes a Home for Haitian Children
David Sheriff (Gettysburg) lost his 14-month-old
son Timothy in 2003, as a result of a
stroke. While he and his wife Judith were
coping with their grief of losing Timothy,
they agreed to be medical foster parents
to a set of twins from Haiti. They were
already experienced adoptive parents,
having previously adopted 12 children
into their blended family.
When Judith visited Haiti to pick up the
twins, the paperwork was delayed and the
children were not allowed to travel. But
while she was there, Judith witnessed
the poor living conditions and realized
the need to find a way to save healthy
children who had been left to die because
their parents couldn't care for them.

Upon returning home, David remembers, "We talked
about it and prayed about it and eventually
decided to open a small home for children with
an emphasis on arranging for adoptions with
families outside of Haiti." That "small home,"
known today as Timothy
House is located in Port au Prince, Haiti
and now cares for 57 children, 0-11 years old.
David joined Sigma Nu at Gettyburg College in
1973 because many of his upper-class friends
were already members of the chapter. He describes
the house as "classy" with its pool table, wooden
staircase, polished wooden tables and chairs
in the dining area. He also recalls that the
members were into brotherhood and learning the
history of the chapter and the National organization.

Profile of a Donor: David Whitlaw
Jr.
Thirty-six-year-old David Whitlaw (Theta
Kappa, Georgia Southern) is Midwest district
sales manager for SPI Dynamics, a leader
in web application security assessment.
David, and his wife, Lisa, live in Atlanta
with their infant son, Christopher.
What are highlights of your collegiate
Sigma Nu experience?
"I loved serving as rush chairman my senior
year of college. I enjoyed meeting prospective
members and |
|
selling them on the fraternity. It was a tough
job, but one I loved. Before I could sell the
new guys, I had to work with the current members
so they could sell the chapter, too. At the time,
we had the largest candidate class with 33 members.
It's one of the most important jobs in the fraternity,
and it was good preparation for what I do today.
"Next to meeting my wife, Lisa, being a member
of Sigma Nu was the best thing that happened to
me in college. Lisa was a little sister at the
fraternity and enjoyed that experience so much
she didn't rush a sorority. We have stayed close
to many of our Sigma Nu friends and definitely
feel it enhanced our college experience."
When
did you begin contributing to Sigma Nu?
"Right out of college, I think as early as
1992 or 1993. I started out giving about $50 a
year, and that has gradually increased as I have
progressed in my job. I feel it is important not
only to support my local chapter but the national
fraternity, too. It is one of the most worthwhile
organizations that Lisa and I contribute to."
