Understanding
OUR Foundation
Do you know why the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation
exists? . . . What the Foundation does? . . .
Why the Foundation is important?
You probably have not given much thought to what
the Foundation is or why it is important. The Sigma
Nu Educational Foundation, Inc. was established
in 1946. As a 501(c)(3) public charity, the Sigma
Nu Educational Foundation affords donors the ability
to receive tax-deductions for contributions.
The Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, our Foundation,
has three (3) areas of focus. First, our Foundation
is the development arm of Sigma Nu. The primary
mission is to raise funds from members and friends
of Sigma Nu to support the educational, leadership
and charitable programs of the Fraternity. This
past year, our Foundation gave $941,000 of support
to our Fraternity and its chapters through grants
and educational assistance and via scholarships
to individual members.
In 1993, the High Council gifted the headquarters
property to our Foundation. With this transaction,
the purpose of our Foundation was expanded to
include the care, maintenance and improvement
of the "Crown Jewel" of Sigma Nu, our
Headquarters property. Our 12-acre "Crown
Jewel" includes the National Headquarters
building, the Ethical Leadership Center, the Pathway of Honor, the Memorial Flag
Pavilion and the Carriage House Barracks. From 1993-1995
a $1.2 million renovation and addition was completed
in time for Sigma Nu's 125th Anniversary.
Our Foundation also maintains and administers more
than 60 Chapter Scholarship Accounts and Chapter
Educational Funds. These are funds that are held
in the name of the chapter for the purpose of funding
scholarships, leadership grants and housing grants
and loans. As contributions are received, they are
"earmarked" and placed into an account
in the chapter's name. Since 2001, $373,000 in scholarships
has been granted to our undergraduate members from
these funds.
There is no question that the needs of the Fraternity
will continue to increase with each passing year
as services to our chapters are expanded. The real
question is, "Will our Foundation be
able to meet these needs?" The answer
to this question remains in the hands of our members.
