Nus Skate for Diabetes Research
Take one part Fraternity, one part West
Texas, and a seemingly insurmountable goal
to skate one million laps at the local roller
rink for diabetes research. Sound crazy?
The men of Zeta Pi chapter at Texas Tech
in Lubbock, Texas didn't seem to think so.
In fact, neither did the more than 550 sorority
women who turned out on February 4, 2006,
to help them raise money for the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in the
South Plains. Sure, it's not quite the stuff
traditional Greek stereotypes are made of,
but that's exactly why our men decided to
host this event. |

Holding the check from L to R: JDRF
Rep. Amanda Kelleher, Vice Regent
Tim Huerta (CSU-Los Angeles) and
Chapter Commander Andrew Crain. |

According to Chapter Commander Andrew Crain, he
was looking for a fun and unique way to raise
spirits, raise awareness and raise dollars for
something that affects so many children throughout
the world. "Although this was only the first
year for 'Skate Night', we're extremely pleased
with the outcome," said Crain. "We were
able to involve hundreds of fellow Greek students
in a non-competitive environment and still have
a great time. And, at the end of the day, we were
able to present the JDRF with a check for $2500.00.
Could you ask for more?"
JDRF leadership has been associated with most
major scientific breakthroughs in Type 1 diabetes
research to date. In fact, JDRF funds a major
portion of all Type 1 diabetes research worldwide,
more than any other charity. Because of its focus
on a cure, JDRF funds research with the greatest
potential impact throughout the world, leading
to results as soon as possible. JDRF is the world's
leading nonprofit, nongovernmental supporter of
diabetes research.
Although they never hit the million lap mark that
day, they did accomplish what they set out to
do: raise awareness about juvenile diabetes and
its effect on children in West Texas. For more

Foundation, please visit their website. |
