As previously announced in The Rock and Foundation News Briefs Online, Brad Hastings (West Georgia) has stepped into the role of Executive Vice President of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation following James Owens’ (Charleston) departure after 20 years of service to Sigma Nu.

For the last three months Owens and Hastings have been working hand-in-hand to effectively transition the position and its responsibilities. "I was very fortunate to spend this transition time with James as I prepared to step into the Executive Vice President role full-time. James’ practical guidance has been instrumental in preparing me for the position," says Hastings.

With the formal transition now behind him Hastings stated, "I am excited about the direction of the Foundation and the programs and initiatives we are undertaking. I look forward to adding my input and joining in the forward progress of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation."

Hastings has already set forth a number of goals that he plans to pursue in this new position. They include:

Increasing the number of Directors of Development to conduct face-to-face alumni visits to share the excellent work of the Fraternity and Foundation with more of our brothers;
Creating a coordinated effort of communication with our alumni;
Increasing the amount of planned gifts by $3 million over three years;
Increasing the number of Foundation board members by 20% in the next three years;
Increasing the volunteer base to assist with fundraising efforts;
Increasing the number of chapter capital campaigns managed by the Foundation;
Establishing an endowment fund to meet future Fraternity needs.

At the close of his tenure with Sigma Nu, Owens and his staff can be credited with much of the recent growth of the Foundation. Under his leadership the following milestones were achieved:

Broadening the donor-base and significantly increasing Foundation funding to the Fraternity;
Increasing communication via online newsletters, the Foundation News Briefs and The Rock, to better inform our key constituents about the needs of Sigma Nu;
Hiring three Directors of Development who, in the past four years, have made face-to-face visits with more than 2,000 alumni to educate them and to seek their support;
Increasing the popularity of online giving through the Sigma Nu website;
Paying off the mortgage on the headquarters property in May 2005;
Transferring ownership of the Sigma Nu Headquarters Shrine to the Foundation, enabling alumni gifts to be used for its restoration and preservation;
Constructing the Memorial Flag Pavilion and expanding the Pathway of Honor with engraved bricks to celebrate the life of each Sigma Nu.

About Owens’ commitment to Sigma Nu, Mike Long (Drury) Chairman of the Foundation commented, "The Foundation will be forever thankful for the exceptional contributions that James has made. We very are fortunate to have someone of Brad Hastings’ experience and reliability to continue our great work. Brad has done excellent work for the Fraternity over the last five years. I’m confident that his drive and passion will take the Foundation to new heights."

Brad Beacham (TCU), Executive Director of the Fraternity, has appointed Timothy Braddick (Cincinnati) to Hastings’ former position as Director of Fraternal Operations. (More information about Braddick can be found in the Feature article of this newsletter.) Beacham said, "We will all greatly miss James and his deep passion for Sigma Nu. But, I’m delighted that the management of the Foundation will be in the capable hands of Brad Hastings."
