College
of Chapters: Unity Circle
Day 3, College of Chapters
Friday, June 17, 2005
College of Chapters is Sigma Nu Fraternity's
biennial leadership development conference.
It is an intensive, interactive program
for our undergraduate members focused on
leadership, teambuilding, and the core principles
of Sigma Nu.
Josh Wheeler, Commander at the University
of Central Florida, attended College of
Chapters in June. "The Unity Circle,"
says Josh, "took our experience at
College of Chapters to a new level."
It was one of the favorite activities during
the conference and was conducted in small
groups of 10-12 men. |

During the activity, each group member was given
a piece of paper with many thought-provoking questions
and asked to answer them in writing. The questions
were personal and required participants to consider
key events in their lives and things or people
who have influenced their character. A few examples
of questions include:
What is the biggest challenge that you've faced?
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Who is someone who has believed in you? How have
they impacted your life?
What is your greatest regret?
What is one thing that you really do well?
After the participants finished answering the
questions on paper, they went around the circle
and everyone shared their responses. The purpose
of the Unity Circle was to build a sense of brotherhood
among the group members. Josh commented that "everyone
was really interested in what others were sharing
and some people were very emotional when they
shared their answers." The Unity Circle,
says Josh, "showed us that we all had something
in common. We learned something significant about
each person in our group and found that, even
coming from different schools and parts of the
country, we all care about the same things."
The Unity Circle built trust within the small
groups in a short period of time. This is an important
aspect of the College of Chapters, which brings
students from across the country to participate
in an intense learning experience. "In our
small group we talked about very deep things within
a week's time of meeting each other," says
Josh. "We shared things with each other that
you normally wouldn't share with people that you've
known for years, but we felt confident that no
one would violate our trust. It was an issue of
honor."
As a member of a colony, Josh won't be initiated
until November, but he felt honored to see "The
Rock" and VMI and to experience the history
of Sigma Nu even though he doesn't yet know the
meaning behind it all. Josh says he would highly
recommend the College of Chapters to other undergraduates
because of the valuable experience and all that
he learned to bring back to his campus - ideas
related to recruitment, socials, brotherhood,
and how to be a better Sigma Nu and a better person.
