SPOTLIGHT
HALL OF HONOR AND HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Sigma Nu International Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce the names of the 2006 Inductees into the Hall of Honor and the Hall of Fame. This year, three alumni were inducted into the Hall of Honor and five into the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Honor
The Hall of Honor is the highest recognition that the Fraternity can bestow. Only 73 alumni have been inducted into the Hall of Honor since its creation in 1948. Each inductee must have distinguished himself in his field and rendered distinctive service to the progress and well-being of Sigma Nu. Each biennium, up to five alumni over the age of 50 may be inducted. All three of this year's inductees were able to attend the 62nd Grand Chapter where they received this special recognition.

The first inductee is Brother Peter A. Faggella who was initiated into Zeta Upsilon at Arizona State University in 1961. He held several leadership positions while an undergraduate member of the chapter. Since 1968, he has remained active serving as a chapter advisor and/or a member of the House Corporation. On the International level, Mr. Faggella served as a Division Commander for chapters in Arizona and California, as a Trustee on the Fraternity Board and as a member of the Board for the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, Inc. He is the co-owner of P.R. Financial Planning in Scottsdale, AZ.

Mike and Cathy Long
Brother Michael D. Long who was initiated into Epsilon Beta at Drury University in 1967 is the second inductee. Since graduating, Mike has remained highly involved both locally and nationally. In 1992, he was initiated into the Theta Sigma chapter at Southwest Missouri State University. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation. In 1994, he became the Fraternity's 54th Regent (National President), the highest office within Sigma Nu. He was most recently honored by the North American Interfraternity Conference Foundation as the 2005 Volunteer of the Year for all Greek
Foundations in the nation. He is the President of Goose Creek Publishing, a company specializing in personalized recognition certificates and awards.

The third and final inductee was Brother David C. Ruegg, a native of the Berkeley area, who joined the Beta Psi chapter of Sigma Nu at the University of California, Berkeley in 1959. His dedicated service to the Fraternity began in 1968 when he took on the roles of Beta Psi Advisor and Treasurer -- positions he held for 20 years. In 1984, he served as the Division Commander for chapters in California. In 1992, he became the Fraternity's 53rd Regent (National President), the highest office within Sigma Nu. Since 2002, Brother Ruegg has served as a Director for the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation
Dave and Eugenia Ruegg
andis currently a member of the Foundation's Executive Committee. He is the Vice President of Rue-Ell Enterprises, Inc. located in Berkeley, CA.

Hall of Fame
A brother selected to the Hall of Fame must have brought credit to his nation, to his profession, himself and to Sigma Nu. Since the Hall of Fame was established in 1982, only 45 alumni have been inducted. Up to ten alumni may be inducted each biennium. The following men were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 62nd Grand Chapter:

Rep. Norman D. Dicks is a 1963 graduate of the University of Washington where he was a member of the Gamma Chi chapter of Sigma Nu. In 1976, he was first elected to Congress for Washington State's 6th Congressional District, and he has been re-elected in every election since that time. Having received a rare first-term appointment to the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Dicks currently serves as a senior member of that Committee. He is a member of three key Appropriations Subcommittees -- Defense, Interior and Military Construction. At the outset of this session of Congress, Rep. Dicks was also appointed to the Select Committee on Homeland Security, and he currently serves as a member of two Subcommittees: Infrastructure & Border Security and Intelligence & Counterterrorism. Rep. Dicks has been an influential moderate member of Congress on defense and national security issues. During the 1980's he was involved in all of the major arms control debates in Congress and was appointed to serve as an official observer to the US-Soviet arms reduction talks because of his expertise.

Brother Lawrence (Larry) P. O'Reilly has had a lifelong career in the automotive parts industry. He received a Business Administration degree from Drury College where he joined the Epsilon Beta chapter of Sigma Nu. In 1993, he was appointed Co-Chairman of the Board and Co-President of O'Reilly Automotive Inc. as well as Chief Operating Officer of O'Reilly Auto Parts. He is a prominent civic leader. Larry is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Lance Armstrong Foundation; he also serves on the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation Board as an honorary director.

When you think of basketball greats, the name Pat Riley definitely comes to mind. Brother Patrick J. Riley currently serves as the President and Head Coach for the world champion Miami Heat. Brother Riley turned down an offer to play college football for Brother Bear Bryant, another Sigma Nu Hall of Fame inductee, at Alabama. He decided instead to play basketball at the University of Kentucky from 1963-67 where he joined the Gamma Iota chapter of Sigma Nu. A gifted athlete, he was an 11th-round draft choice of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys in 1967, although he never played college football. As a youthful role player for the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, Riley earned the first of his seven NBA championship rings. He claimed another as an assistant coach with the Lakers in 1979-80; four more as the Lakers' coach in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988; and, his seventh, this past June when the Miami Heat became the 2006 NBA Champions. He has been honored three times as the NBA Coach of the Year, the only coach in NBA history to receive the award with three different teams. In 1996-97, as the NBA celebrated its 50th Anniversary, Riley received one of the highest honors bestowed upon an NBA coach when he was named one of the Top 10 Coaches of All-time.

Congressman Roger F. Wicker received his B.A. and law degrees from the University of Mississippi where he joined the Epsilon Xi chapter of Sigma Nu. While at the University, Roger served as the Associated Student Body President. He has served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force and then in the Air Force Reserve. He retired from the Reserve in 2004 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At the conclusion of his active duty, he became Counsel to then-Congressman Trent Lott (another Sigma Nu Hall of Fame inductee) on the House Rules Committee in 1980. In 1987, he became the first Republican elected to the state Senate from North Mississippi in the 20th century. He has served Mississippi's First Congressional District since 1995. He was re-elected to a sixth term in November 2004. In January 2006, his son McDaniel was initiated as the 2,253rd member of the Epsilon Xi chapter.

Brother Wicker presented the 2006 Maddox Honor Lecture during the opening session of the Grand Chapter. Following his presentation, he received this special recognition.

The blockbuster hit film "Remember the Titans" introduced the world to a remarkable man, Brother William R. Yoast. The movie told the story of how, in 1971, two racially diverse football programs were collapsed into the super high school T.C. Williams in Alexandria, Virginia. This story centered on two coaches, one black--Herman Boone--and one white--Brother Yoast--that had to set their differences aside to achieve a common goal. They did and the Titans delivered a remarkable season and became one of the most talked about teams of all time.

Yoast attended Mercer University where he joined the Eta chapter of Sigma Nu and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. Yoast continued his studies at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his Masters and Educational Specialist degrees. He began teaching and coaching football, basketball, baseball and track. In his new book, "Remember This Titan: Lessons Learned from a Celebrated Coach's Journey," Brother Yoast offers his personal recollections from that now-immortalized football season as well as the coaching philosophy he developed in over 30 years of coaching. It is a story filled with sorrow and joy and chronicles the life of a man in search of answers. It is a factual depiction of a man who understood what was right...and did it!

Brother Yoast and his Sigma Nu roommate, Brother Ed Sanders, attended the 62nd Grand Chapter. While there Yoast took time to converse with members, pause for photographs and autograph his new book. A large portion of the proceeds from the sale of these books at the Grand Chapter went to benefit the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation.
