SPOTLIGHT
A Moment in Time

Charles Valan (Mount Union) spent only a few months in the Sigma Nu chapter at Mount Union College. It was just enough time to go through pledgeship and initiation before an illness in his family had him transferring to a college that was closer to home. It was enough time, however, for Valan to form a bond with Sigma Nu and his fraternity brothers that would last a lifetime.

In 1983, while he was still in college, Valan made his first contribution to the Sigma Nu Foundation.
He gave this gift in memory of Michael Hardy (Mount Union), a chapter brother who was killed in a drunk-driving accident after Valan left campus. He learned of Hardy’s death in a letter from one of his fellow Sigma Nu brothers shortly after it happened, and he remembers the impact it had on him. "Michael wasn't my pledge brother or big brother, but he was a nice guy who was fun to be around." So every year, for the last 23 years, Valan has made a contribution to the Foundation in memory of Hardy. "I do it so the brothers don't forget, and so that I won’t forget either. It’s a reminder to me of how precious life is."

PROGRAM PROFILE
Nascar Items Added To The Bid For Brotherhood

Organizations like Ducks Unlimited and local arts groups have been holding successful charity auctions for years. These auctions are popular not only because of the social aspect of the event, but also for the opportunity to bid on unique items and support a worthy cause.

Then came eBay! Now you can sit in the comfort of your home
or office and bid on exclusive trips, golf balls, autographed memorabilia, vintage clothing. . . just about anything.

Given the success of these auctions, it was only a matter of time before Sigma Nu ventured into this arena with our first-ever Bid for Brotherhood (B4B) live and silent auction. The online auction is currently underway. We have more than 60 items to bid on and new items are added each week.
DONOR EDUCATION
Does Perception = Reality?

As I sit here today, the newest class of Fraternity Leadership Consultants has just arrived for duty. This got me thinking about just how long I have worked on staff, and I realized that this summer is the start of my 20th year working for Sigma Nu. It’s hard to believe that when I arrived here in 1987, I had a full head of hair.

Then
Now

It seems like just yesterday (1985) when I was considering joining either Sigma Nu or another fraternity at the College of Charleston. Sigma Nu was the smallest chapter and rented the smallest house on campus. Conversely, the other was the largest chapter on campus and owned the largest house. I recall vividly my conversations with the officers of both chapters as I mentioned that I was looking to join one of these two fraternities.

NEWS FLASH
Remember This Titan. . . Coach Bill Yoast

The blockbuster hit film "Remember the Titans" introduced the world to a remarkable man, Brother Bill Yoast (Mercer). The movie told the story of how, in 1971, two racially diverse football programs were collapsed into the super high school T.C. Williams in Alexandria, Virginia. This story centered on two coaches, one black, Herman Boone, and one white, Brother Yoast, that had to set their differences aside to achieve a common goal. They did, and the Titans delivered a remarkable season and became one of the most talked about teams of all time.

What is more remarkable though is the journey that took a poverty-stricken adolescent from Tin-Can Hollow, Alabama to a Hollywood premier. Coach Yoast shares his story with his new book
