The Evolution of the Foundation
When the Foundation Board of Directors held their Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA during the first weekend in June 2005, there were accomplishments to celebrate and announcements to be made. A San Diego area alumni reception was the kick-off event of the weekend and over 50 alumni and friends were in attendance. One alumnus, Calvin Pouncy (Montana) made the four-hour drive from Las Vegas to take part in the alumni reception. |

When asked why he had traveled so far to attend Brother Pouncy said, "I have not been very active with Sigma Nu since I graduated. I saw this as an opportunity to get reacquainted with my fraternity."
During the annual banquet held on Friday night, Brother Mike Long, Foundation President, first thanked the Directors and Executive Committee for their dedication and hard work over the last two years. He then continued with a salute to a very special group of people by saying, "My special thanks go to our Sigma Nu Sweethearts and our loved ones who continue to allow us to 'play' Fraternity."

Brother Long also highlighted the four most significant achievements of the Educational Foundation over the last few years. The first was the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan which serves as a "road map" to guide our Foundation. Second, the mortgage on the headquarters property with a balance of $735,000 in 2001 was paid in full on May 27, 2005. Brother Long celebrated this milestone by burning a copy of the retired note.
The third accomplishment highlighted was the |
implementation of the Foundation's development program. Since the fall of 2001, over 1,329 alumni have been personally visited; these visits have amounted to more than $902,000 in contributions. Finally, Brother Long praised the Foundation for leading the Greek world with our innovative Internet-based solicitations, our two (2) bi-monthly online newsletters and our newly developed Planned Giving Website. He also announced that over the last 2 years our Foundation has won three awards from our peers at the annual Foundations Seminar sponsored by the North-American Interfraternity Conference.
Brother Long then announced the establishment of the new Richard R. Fletcher Honor Society. The purpose of this Society is to recognize alumni and friends of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation for their contributions of time, talent and/or treasure. He announced that there were three (3) inductees to recognize. The first two (2) inductees, Richard R. Fletcher (Penn State) and Herman B Wells (Indiana), were presented the award posthumously. Brother Long then introduced the third inductee, current Director, past-President and former Chairman of the Foundation, Brother Robert L. Marchman, III (Emory).

then took the stage to share his vision for the next few years. He started by saying, "I think that it's pretty evident to everyone here tonight that this is a great time to be involved with our Foundation. We've accomplished much and have many great things to look forward to in the near future." Brother Haesemeyer stated that he sees the next few years as an opportunity for continued evolution of our Foundation. He stated that the Foundation will continue to follow and modify the Strategic Plan to meet our needs. The staff will grow so that we may expand our donor base. We will continue our focus on planned giving and chapter campaigns. He concluded by stating that, "Best of all, we will expand our development efforts so that we can provide increased funding to Sigma Nu. After all, isn't that what we're all about?"
These two charts demonstrate the growth of the Foundation since 2001.
