Sigma
Nu Institute Trains New Leaders
When Patrick McConnell (Washington State)
graduates he hopes to go to business school
to earn either an MBA or an advanced degree
in finance, but today he's leading a different
kind of business as Commander of the Sigma
Nu chapter at Washington State University.
As a newly elected Commander, McConnell
was invited to attend the Sigma Nu Institute
in January for intense practical training
at the hands of some of the most experienced
leaders in the Fraternity.
Each year, new Commanders are elected and
step into chapter leadership. They are immediately
responsible for budgets, members, events
and risk management at a level |

greater
than many small businesses. Even for experienced
chapter officers, leadership takes on a whole
new meaning when they, in essence, become the
CEO of their chapter. As often happens, retiring
chapter officers complete their duties, and even
those with the best intentions may not take the
time to properly prepare younger men to take the
helm. That fact alone necessitates increased training
to prepare these new leaders for a successful
term of office.

Planning Now for the Future
Do you have questions about estate planning? Planned
giving? Your will? Each month on our website we
feature new articles and interactive features
that cover these topics and more.
New This Month...
Sharpen your pencil and prepare to concentrate.
How much do you know about boosting investment
income and cutting taxes? Take
our new "Q & A" to find
out.
You may be familiar with a number of arcane terms
that are largely unheard outside of your professional
circles. The same is true for tax professionals,
though there is one tax term you may want to know
and understand: income in respect of a decedent,
or IRD. Among all of your assets, the largest
IRD source will likely be retirement accounts.
Read "Are
You Aware of the Unnamed Beneficiaries of Your
Retirement Assets?" to find out
how you can reduce the IRD tax burden.
"Do-it-yourself" wills are available
everywhere, from office supply stores and computer
programs offering legal forms of all types to
a plethora of Web sites. They all promise to help
you sidestep unnecessary legal fees by showing
you how to prepare legal documents, such as wills
and trusts, by yourself. That initial cost savings,
however, can come at a huge price later on. Discover
how expensive this option could really be in "The
Dangers of 'Do-It-Yourself' Wills."

. . . that Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
get Double-Taxed?
First, the IRA gets hit with the Estate Tax.
Then, your beneficiaries must pay their regular
Income Tax on the remaining proceeds of
the IRA. A great way to avoid this double-taxation
is to leave the proceeds of your IRA to the Sigma
Nu Educational Foundation. By doing so, your estate
will receive a charitable tax deduction for the
amount of the IRA and neither your estate nor
your heirs will pay tax on the value of the IRA.
