Foundation Director Receives Call to the Hall

Induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame is reserved for Indiana residents or players who have distinguished themselves as exceptional members of their high school or college football teams and/or served as referees, administrators or supporters of Indiana football.

The ceremonies, which have a limited number of invited guests, are conducted at select sites around the state. This year's induction included five of White's IU teammates and their team doctor who was an All-American tight end a decade before White played.

"We had a fun group present, and Indiana University was well-represented that night. It's always terrific to be remembered or recognized for good things, and my induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame is no exception," White said.

White was not just a proven starter; he also played a role in his team's success as co-champions of the Big 10 in 1967, with a season record of 9-2. Their second loss that season was a 14-3 defeat to the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl, where they faced an excellent team with six players who would go on to become first-round NFL draft picks.

White comments that football success for the IU team was practically unheard of in those days. The last Hoosier team to win the Big 10 was in 1945, and the Rose Bowl wasn't played that year because of World War II. On top of that, prior to 1975 the NCAA allowed only one Big 10 team to represent the conference in post season bowl play. E.G. White's 1967 squad remains the only team in IU history to make a Rose Bowl appearance.

His season as captain represents a legacy of leadership for White because he's not the only player in the family to have donned a cream and crimson football jersey. His father Eugene G. White, Sr., who was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1988, also captained the IU team nearly 30 years before in 1941. They are the only father and son to captain a Big 10 team and play the same position of guard. They are also the only father and son in the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

While the gridiron days of the past live on through his Hall of Fame induction, E.G. has kept strong ties with Sigma Nu. Over the span of four decades, he has faithfully served the Fraternity and the Educational Foundation in numerous capacities.

With connections to Herman B Wells (Indiana), former IU President and former Regent of Sigma Nu, and BillArmstrong (Indiana), past Trustee of Sigma Nu
and head of the IU Foundation at the time, it wasn't long after his college graduation that E.G. was encouraged to get involved with Sigma Nu on a national level. He attended his first Grand Chapter in 1978, and he hasn't missed one since.

In 1984, White was elected as a Grand Councilman, now known as Vice Regent, and he served in that capacity until he became Regent for the term from 1996-1998. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation for 18 months and has been a member of the Foundation Board since 1988.

"I've been involved for all these years because I wanted to extend a helping hand and give back by assisting the Fraternity and Foundation to be the best that they can be. I had a lot of doors opened for me and feel the need to do that for others," he says.
