The Robert N. Maddox Honor Lecture
by Mr. James C. Cherry, Grand Chapter Address

James C. Cherry (Hampden Sydney) is chief executive officer of Mid-Atlantic Banking for Wachovia
Bank, N.A., the nations 4th largest financial institution. Brother Cherry was inducted in the Hall of Honor in 2002. He has served the Legion of Honor over the past three (3) decades in various capacities including Regent (1990-92) and currently as the Chairman of the Educational Foundation.

Are you men of the day or creatures of the night? Will your life's work be best seen and judged in the bright light of day or will it be more favorably viewed on a moonless night through a glass darkly? And will you lead others on the path you follow?

James C. Cherry gives Grand Chapter Address

Good morning, I am delighted to be with you on the occasion of our 61st Grand Chapter to discuss these important questions and the answers, which can have such great import to all of our lives.

To start, join me at our beginning. Journey back in time for a moment and picture in your mind's eye, if you can, a cold, frosty, moonlit night. The date: October 1868. The place: a parade ground at Virginia Military Institute. Here, three men gathered near a limestone outcropping, placed their hands over a Bible, and pledged themselves to a brotherhood based on the tenets of honor, love, and truth.

Now, here we are together, well over a century later, still called to respond to the demands of these principles. What did these words mean to them? And, more importantly, what do they mean to us today?
PROGRAM PROFILE
LEAD Phase I -- Training our Newest Members

Sigma Nu's LEAD Institutes are being held on Saturdays this spring in a number of locations across the country. The LEAD Institute is Sigma Nu's training program for LEAD Chairmen, Commanders, Marshals and Alumni Volunteers. Its purpose is to give participants the knowledge and skills to effectively facilitate the LEAD Program in their chapters. The institutes provide a positive learning environment where leaders can grow and improve their facilitation skills through hands-on training, become familiar with the four phases of the LEAD Program, and get tips to help them coordinate a successful LEAD Program when they return to their chapter.

Phase I of the LEAD Program is Sigma Nu's official Candidate Education Program. It was revised in 2000
and includes sessions on leadership, values, ethics, teamwork and Sigma Nu History. The purpose of Phase I is to give Candidates a solid foundation of Sigma Nu knowledge combined with the mission of building brothers who will become contributing members of their chapter and campus community. This is a deviation from the 1980's paradigm of member education, when the primary focus of the Candidate program was on memorization and building an outstanding pledge.

All of the Phase I sessions introduce Candidates to concepts they will revisit in future phases. Phase I has 10 sessions and 2 optional sessions. Most chapters require that Candidates complete all sessions prior to Initiation. During each session, Candidates participate in experiential learning activities to reinforce the topic being discussed. In addition to the LEAD sessions, chapters may include other positive chapter traditions from their Candidate Education Program.

by James A. Owens

Tragedy struck the Sigma Nu family in early January when long-time Executive Assistant, Ida H. Paxton, passed away. Ida joined the staff in 1958...
