Meet a P3!

Carly Miller Giesbrecht
Alberta Alpha ‘00
Edmonton, Alberta

Not ever hearing much about fraternities or sororities (besides what was in the movies), I pledged Pi Phi in Northern Canada, and to be honest - I wasn’t sure quite what to expect. It didn’t take me long to realize that I had joined an incredible organization of amazing women. After three years of working on my Education degree as a mathematical-sciences major at the University of Alberta, I decided to travel abroad. Living and working in Edinburgh Scotland, I contacted the London Alumnae Pocket.

Where do I begin to write how Pi Phi has affected my life in the last 6 years? To start, I made the greatest decision in the fall of 2000 to pledge Arkansas Alpha at the University of Arkansas. What was extra special about this decision, which I didn't appreciate until later on, was that both my step-mother and grandmother are Arkansas Alphas as well. As close as we already were at the time, our bonds were extended even more through our sisterhood in Pi Phi. As a collegian, I made the closest friends I'd ever known, gained invaluable social and leadership skills, and eventually was given an even greater opportunity to serve our Fraternity after college as a Consultant! Last year, I had the privilege of being the Resident Consultant for the NC Delta Chapter at North Carolina State University. We ended the year with 88 amazing women who were passionate and excited about their new membership in Pi Phi. It was amazing to see so many women that were in need of a sisterhood, and that were so intrigued by our amazing values and lifelong membership benefits. The best part about it for me was that it helped me renew my own commitment and love for our organization, as well as being able to offer the same incredible sisterhood to others at that school.

June 2006
Day Trippin'
With rising gas prices, you may think your summer has gone down the drain. Forget about the cross-country trip to Florida and fill up on local fun instead. Why not plan a day or weekend trip to a nearby big city or small town? There are lots of opportunities to get out and enjoy the warm weather, no matter where you live. If you live in a city, there are always free concerts and the theater to attend. And for those of you from small towns, you can always get out and enjoy the local festivals and parades... Turnip Days anyone?

Looking for something new (and inexpensive)? Plan a girls' weekend or a couples' weekend in the wild. Relax as you float down a local river, grill with friends, and camp under the stars. Take in a city and share the hotel cost. While you're there, enjoy a baseball game, shop till you drop or visit a museum (often free). Drive to a lake and soak up some rays or wind-up your weekend at a winery and enjoy the local selections. Watch airplanes spin and twist at a nearby air show or plan a small picnic at your nearby park. The possibilities are endless; all you have to do is look!

If you live in the Northeast, why not take a day trip to Lancaster County and see the Pennsylvania Amish? You can find guided tours on the internet, or just drive through on your own. Or, if you're in the Northwest, take a trip to Seattle's famous Pike Place Market where you can find produce, antiques and exotic goods from around the world. For those of you in Tennessee, spend a day at the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame, learning about the great country music stars.
If festivals spark your interest, visit www.festivals.com to find a list of events in your area. Simply click on a state or type in a keyword and you'll find festivals ranging from Polish Fest to Barbeque and Bluegrass. Whether you're interested in the Houston Hot Sauce Festival or the North Carolina Blueberry Festival, there's something for everyone.

For more information about your destination of choice, you can contact AAA or the chamber of commerce. You can also visit your favorite bookstore and check out the local interest section for driving directions and information on other fun activities. Be sure to check websites like www.hotels.com or www.expedia.com for great deals on hotel rooms. It's also a good idea to look online for special deals on tickets or rental fees.
Whatever you decide to do, be sure to plan ahead and it's sure to be a success... save your cash and still have a blast this summer!

BOOK REPORT

Literacy is a vital service project of Pi Beta Phi. The Foundation makes grants to the Fraternity to support its Champions Are Readers (CAR) program. What was the last book you read? We’d love to hear from you. Submit a "book report" and we may share your critique with other sisters in future issues.

Hearts that are Bound by the Wine and Silver Blue by Fraternity Historian New York Alpha Frances DeSimone Becque, Ph.D., and designed by Kentucky Alpha Karen Boone.

From the book’s foreword by Fran Becque... "Hearts That Are Bound by the Wine and Silver Blue is not meant to be another retelling of the Fraternity’s history. Instead it is a glimpse into the people, places and things we hold dear as members of Pi Beta Phi."

Hearts That Are Bound by the Wine and Silver Blue is available from Pi Phi Express on the Fraternity’s Web site.
WITH YOUR HELP...
The Foundation will award $122,300 in undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships and Alumnae Continuing Education Scholarships to 75 deserving Pi Phis for the upcoming 2006-2007 academic year. Again this year the largest amount of scholarship aid awarded for one academic year in Foundation history. All with your help... Thank you!
THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE Wedding Favor BOX
Forget the pastel colored almonds, the newest trend in wedding favors is charitable giving! In lieu of traditional favors, couples are making donations in honor of their guests. It’s a fabulous way for the bride and groom to make a difference and leave a personal mark on their big day... and don’t forget, if couples choose an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) organization, like the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, it’s also tax deductible.
