A Bundle of Joy

So many women grow up with the misguided notion that, when it's their turn to have a child, they'll know exactly what to do to take care of their new baby. But, many new moms find that having a baby is more difficult then expected, especially once sleep deprivation starts to kick in. Phi Mu Foundation shares tips for new moms to help you get through those long nights.

Don't go it alone. You've often heard the phrase, "No man is an island." And, it's never truer than with new parents. When you bring your newborn home, so many people will want to stop by and lend their support. By all means, take them up on their offers. Be it a friendly face, someone bringing by a home-cooked meal or a night of babysitting services, your friends and family truly want to help you during this exciting time.
Take time for yourself. Once the baby has actually arrived, many new moms find themselves immersed in their child's life. These moms look up one day and find they haven't eaten properly, slept well or taken care of themselves. Don't neglect yourself during this time. It's not being selfish to take care of yourself; it's being a responsible parent.
Don't neglect your spouse. Just as new mommies sometimes neglect themselves, they all too often also neglect their significant others. Though it will be difficult during the first few months, try to find time for just the two of you. The stronger the bond between the two of you, the better role models you'll be for your child.
Hang out with grown-ups. Having children is a time-consuming but wonderful commitment. But, don't lose touch with your coworkers, family and friends. These grown-ups will rescue you from baby talk and will keep you connected with the world-at-large. They just may be your key to sanity after all that lack of sleep.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Just like the book says, try not to worry over every little detail. If you ever have any doubts about child rearing, consult your parents, other moms or your physician. The adage "Mother knows best" is quite true, so trust your gut instincts.

Having a baby is such an exciting time. You'll soon forget the sleepless nights, endless feedings and piles of dirty laundry. Instead, memories of watching your baby grow and achieving milestones will fill your heart. Just remember that your Phi Mu Sisters, family and friends are there for you along the way.
