Phi Mu Invests Time, Talent and Treasure to Make a Big Difference
The warm southern drawl and sweet smile belie the strength that resides within Jen Free, Kappa Nu, '97. The Paducah, Ky., native moved to Jackson, Tenn., a town of about 100,000, to attend college at Lambuth University. She's endured the rigors of collegiate athletics, the LSAT exam and even an F-4 tornado. But, through it all, Jen Free remains positive.
While Jen would one day like to practice law in the criminal/defense/domestic
fields, she is currently juggling courses at the Nashville School
of Law, while working nine to fifteen hours a day as a Legal
Assistant at a Jackson law firm. Of her chosen profession, Jen
says people have a misconception that "attorneys are just
representing an individual for the fee." Instead, Jen devotes
her time to working directly with clients, visiting them in
their own homes, if they are disabled. Says Jen, "I like
to see each case on a more personal level, imagining what it
would be like if it were me, my mother or my child being charged
with a crime."
When not working from her firm's temporary office--a necessity that resulted from the tornado that hit Jackson last year--Jen devotes her spare time to Phi Mu. She uses her experiences as former Membership Director to assist the Kappa Nu chapter in whatever way possible. Jen is involved with the collegians for one simple reason: "If you can make a difference in at least one young woman's life, you have upheld your duties as a Phi Mu. Give money, give candy, give time or give advice," Jen urges other young alumnae. "Simple things mean the world to collegians. They look to us for guidance and will remember that and their obligation to Phi Mu once they become alumnae."
Jen follows her own advice, giving not only her time and talents,
but also her treasure, to Phi Mu. She supports the Sisterhood
Fund through membership in the 1852 Society. Jen says she
joined the 1852 Society, "because that's what Phi Mu is
about. Others have made a path for you, and you, in return,
should do whatever you can to keep that path going for the next
Phi Mu."

Jen Free, Kappa Nu, loves that "in Phi
Mu, you can be yourself. You don't have to worry about what
anyone else thinks because you are accepted for who you are."
This devoted young alumna gives back to our Fraternity because
she wants Phi Mu to become "the largest, most notable
fraternity."
