Giving Back Means Giving Hope

A typical day for new-mom Brenna Hartzell Tatusko, Beta Upsilon, might consist of marveling at her one month old son's growth. Or, it might be spent consulting with patients of a local mental healthcare organization. Or, it might even include completing projects for graduate coursework at Rider University. What's so amazing about this Phi Mu alumna is not that she manages to juggle so many important tasks, but that she still finds time to give back, in spite of her busy schedule.

As the New Jersey state coordinator for Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, a national dog rescue organization, Brenna finds herself spending much of her volunteer time in educating the public about the demands of having a pet. Brenna is also charged with the difficult task of evaluating dogs for adoption and finding the best candidates from among the hopefuls.

Despite the emotional struggles of being involved with an animal rescue, Brenna feels she has found her "calling." "The pet rescue is rewarding, and I truly enjoy it," she shares. "I encourage all Phi Mus to find you're passion and go from there. The most important thing about volunteering is doing something you enjoy."

The same could be said of continuing a lifelong relationship with Phi Mu: find those areas you love the most--be it mentoring, volunteering, or fundraising--and stay involved. Brenna's best advice for other young alumnae is to stay connected. "When I moved to the east coast, I began to connect with other Phi Mus in the greater New York City area, and we have become great pals!"

Beta Upsilon alumna Brenna Tatusko finds ways to volunteer, support Phi Mu and maintain her home and consulting career, proving that Phi Mu women can do it all!
