Be Heart Smart

Well, summer is here and with it comes increased opportunities for outdoor activities. Take advantage of the warmer weather to delight in sports or trips that both entertain and offer health benefits.

From swimming to hiking to biking, there are a number of activities that are fun and will get your heart racing. Even playing with the kids or grandkids has its benefits. From playing "tag" to nature walks or a game of Frisbee, you are sure to find an activity that is of interest to all ages. And, the more fun you have when exercising, the more likely you are to stick with it.

Just be careful not to overdo it. Always consult your physician before beginning any new workout regime. Especially during the hot summer months, be sure to stay hydrated. Avoid exposure during the peak hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to reduce your risk of heat exhaustion. When outdoors, wear your sunscreen. And, should you ever feel lightheaded or like you're doing too much, stop and take a break. Remember, be heart smart.
