The Great Joy of Serving New Orleans
Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast regions over a year ago, and things are far from being back to normal. On Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, over 75 Phi Psis from around the country did their part to help return New Orleans to the vibrant city it was before the largest natural disaster in history changed everything.
The brothers, under the direction of Habitat for Humanity, worked in the severely damaged Upper 9th Ward on the Musicians’ Village project, which will establish homes for the many displaced musicians of New Orleans. Music, particularly jazz and the blues, is vital to the cultural fabric of the city. There are countless musicians that call New Orleans home many of which never reached any level of stardom, but instead play for the love of their art.
The brothers worked several hours in the emerging music village. Their tasks ranged from dry walling, hanging doors and hanging soffits on the outside of homes. While this one morning only addressed a small part of the needs that face New Orleans in the rebuilding process, it helped the residents move one small step closer to getting their city back.
Having the Grand Arch Council in New Orleans, a decision questioned in the immediate aftermath last year, proved to many in Phi Psi that there is a future in New Orleans. The money that our brothers spent, the hands-on service that was performed and the stories that they return home to tell will continue to help the revitalization of New Orleans.
