There's
a New Kid in Town
Actually, it's just a new type of rushee.
He's more concerned with grades and wants
to know how affiliation with a fraternity
will make him more successful in college,
help him find money to pay for it and ensure
he has a job waiting when he graduates.
It's a challenging market segment for chapters
who haven't updated the way they recruit
new members, but offers fantastic benefits
when new members join. The problem? These
men rarely seek out fraternity membership.
A number of Phi Psi chapters have figured
out how to find and market to these men,
and it's a far cry from what might have
worked in past decades. Instead of relying

"meet-and-great" tactics, which usually
last a week or less, pioneering chapters like
Iowa Alpha and Minnesota Beta have created scholarship
programs offering sizeable scholarships to non-affiliated
men -- primarily entering freshmen -- to help
identify those with the academic and leadership
skills that will help make them and the chapter
successful. In effect, the scholarship applications
produce the perfect rush list.
Iowa Alpha's Nile Kinnick Scholarship Program
has "allowed us to reach almost 2000 first-year
men annually who would not otherwise have been
exposed to Greek Life," says chapter president
Hayes Olofson. He went on to say chapters utilizing
scholarship programs reap many rewards:
| 1. |
Support
from their school |
| 2. |
Positive
visibility on campus |
| 3. |
Approval
from parents of potential members |
| 4. |
Interest
from many students who would not have been
interested in only social opportunities |
He
says, "You get what you advertise for."
A first impression based on scholarship, leadership
and service attracts men who are supportive
of those priorities.
Though the benefits of such a program are apparent,
many chapters may not think they have the time
or the resources to attempt such an endeavor.
That's why the Endowment Fund has created the
Excellence Bound Scholarship Program. The program
was created to assist chapters with recruiting
through scholarship by developing a personalized
plan to recruit, retain and reward incoming
students. If implemented properly, chapters
will have a much larger pool from which to choose
new members, will utilize their Chapter Scholarship
Fund money efficiently and, most importantly,
will pledge and initiate motivated and talented
men into their chapters.
