Volunteering At An All Time High!

There are many ways to give back to Phi Psi. One way is serving on a National Scholarship Selection Committee. At the end of each semester, a binder containing some of Phi Psi’s best and brightest undergrads awaits review by a selection committee made up of alumni from different chapters and backgrounds. The unique thing about this process, whether you’re 5 years or 25 years out of school, is that you are able to take a peek at how the undergrads of today are performing.

Every semester, a scholarship committee is formed for each of the National Scholarships offered. Once the application deadline has passed, the process of reading through the applications and letters of recommendation begins. Then committee members join in a conference call to discuss their rankings of the applicants.

"Part of my job as a judge involves conferring with my peer judges and reading over the applications. It takes minimal time but it’s a reality check of just how brothers from varying majors and backgrounds achieve so much in so brief an undergraduate career." says Chris Hammer, Rowan ’91. "I feel strongly that my contributions as a volunteer judge shows how we alumni can do something to positively affect our members’ educational experience. . . a little goes a long way".

National Scholarships are a great way for Phi Psi to recognize the hard work and dedication, not only to the chapter, but to academics by undergraduates. Currently, spring 2007 applications are being accepted via the Foundation’s website. When asked what more could be done to the scholarship selection process, Chris said "I do wish more brothers would apply, for there’s money to be won but only if you make the effort."
