Fall 2006 National Scholarship Winners Announced

The Endowment Fund of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity has announced the Fall 2006 National Scholarship Winners. Each year, the Endowment Fund gives away over $250,000 in scholarships to deserving graduate and undergraduate Phi Psis through chapter and national scholarships. During the fall 2006 semester, 31 scholarships totaling $41,500.00 were handed out to Phi Psis across America. Below are the winners for fall 2006. The Endowment Fund congratulates all the winners and encourages every Phi Psi in school to apply for spring 2007 awards via the Endowment Fund's website. The deadline for spring awards is May 1.

Ralph D. Daniel Award

The Ralph D. Daniel Award is named after the Fraternity's Executive Director Emeritus, who served Phi Kappa Psi over 30 years. Ralph D. "Dud" Daniel, affectionately known as "Mr. Phi Psi," is one of the most respected figures in the national men's college fraternity movement.

Dud has been recognized with a National Interfraternity Conference Gold Medal, the highest award given by the NIC, which represents 66 men's national college fraternities.

The $4,000 scholarship is the Endowment Fund's most prestigious award and a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required, but one's chapter, campus and community leadership is the primary measure by which the winner is selected.

Ralph D. "Dud" Daniel Award Winner - Andrew Pinson

Andrew Pinson, Georgia '04, is majoring in Finance at the University of Georgia, where he serves as President of Georgia Alpha. He also played a major role in implementing internet banking and bill pay for his chapter as well as computerizing the ledger and all accounting records. On campus, Andrew is a member of the Order of Omega and Phi Alpha Delta, a pre-law fraternity.

Upon his graduation in 2008, Andrew plans to pursue a dual graduate degree in a J.D./MBA program. After graduating, he wants to work as a legal counsel for an investment banking firm and hopes one day to open his own law practice focusing on financial law and ethical business practices.

Solon E. Summerfield Scholarship Program

Solon E. Summerfield, Kansas '99, passed away in 1947, but half a century later his legacy lives on through the Solon E. Summerfield Foundation. This foundation provides income each year to the Endowment Fund of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity for the purpose of recognizing and rewarding some of the Fraternity's best and brightest scholar-leaders.

Solon E. Summerfield, an 1899 initiate of the Kansas Alpha Chapter at the University of Kansas, was the founder and CEO of the Gotham Gold Stripe Hosiery Company of New York. He was a tremendous supporter of his alma mater, as well as the Fraternity. When brother Summerfield died in 1947, his will established the foundation that continues to provide income each year to many charitable and educational institutions and organizations.

Phi Kappa Psi created the Summerfield Scholar program in 1959, providing a $100 scholarship to an outstanding scholar and leader from each chapter. While a $100 went a long way toward educational expenses 40 years ago, that award barely would cover the cost of books for one class at most colleges and universities today.

In 1996, the Trustees of the Endowment Fund revamped the program by eliminating the numerous, smaller awards in favor of fewer, bigger awards. They reduced the total number of scholarships, but increased the amount of each scholarship tenfold. The result was an influx of highly qualified and deserving applicants from which to choose the winners. The 80-plus awards totaling a little more than $8,000 have become 28 awards totaling $32,500, including awards of $3,000, $2,500 and $2,000 to top applicants.

Outstanding Summerfield Award Winner - Eddie Matthews

Eddie Matthews, TCNJ '05, is majoring in finance at The College of New Jersey. Eddie has served as President, Vice President, Governing Chair and other positions for Phi Kappa Psi. On campus, Eddie is the Vice President of Standards and Conduct for the Inter Greek Council and is involved in many intramural sports.

Eddie will be an intern for Merrill Lynch in the spring of 2007, and hopes to pursue a MBA.

Michael was a teaching assistant and research assistant in 2006.

After graduation, Michael hopes to be a doctor in neuroscience and is planning on going to New Zealand to fully understand how health care is approached in other countries.
