Springman Credits Phi Psi For Much Of His Success
Paul Springman is the Executive Vice President of the Markel Corporation, MKL-NYSE, headquartered in Richmond, VA, an international property and casualty insurance holding company, which concentrates on specialty products and services for various markets. He is a Tennessee Deltan and graduated from Vanderbilt in 1973 with a major in political science and a minor in economics.
Becoming involved in the Fraternity was the right choice for Paul. "After my father died when I was a young man, I became very close with an uncle who was a fraternity member. He shared many of his college experiences and the educational, social and personal friendship opportunities that his fraternity allowed him to enjoy. It all sounded great to me. From the onset, I felt very comfortable with the Phi Psi house and with the brothers. I was honored to accept their bid during |

final rush. It was a group of geographically diverse brothers, relatively medium in size with a sense that the younger brothers in the house really wanted to change things for the future, it turned out to be the perfect fit for me."
Paul was President and Vice President (twice) of the chapter and was involved in numerous campus activities, including Interfraternity Council representative, the college Young Republicans and a member of the Vanderbilt duplicate bridge club. "Phi Psi taught me how to work well in groups, how to get along well with others and equally important, the ability to set aside individual concerns in the spirit of teamwork. These three key ingredients led to my success I enjoy today."
In 1992, he was elected as a company director of NAPSLO (National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices) and later assumed the position of President of NAPSLO for the 1997-98 year. Paul was honored by NAPSLO with the Charles A. McAlear award for distinguished service to the excess and surplus lines industry.
In 2000, Mr. Springman relocated to Richmond and became President of Markel North America, responsible for all U.S. operating subsidiaries. In September of 2002, Mr. Springman was promoted to his current position in which he assists Tony Markel, President of Markel Corporation, in managing worldwide underwriting operations for Markel.
Paul is an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He lives with his wife in Richmond, Va.
