Climbing for a Cure
Mark Biscone, RIT ’96, is looking
forward to the adventure of a lifetime. But he also
wants that personal adventure to have a much wider
impact. “This is the biggest thing to come along
where I can combine my love of hiking and adventure
with a good cause,” Brother Biscone says. “This
opportunity allows me incredible challenges matched
with immeasurable rewards.”
Mark, who has spent most of his life researching
medicines and treatments in a laboratory setting,
will be hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro from February 23
to March 8, 2008 “to celebrate the struggles, the
courage of spirit and the sharing of |

community…to spread hope to the world…to
demonstrate what is possible in a world community…to strive
to develop support for each other, spread awareness, fund
the cancer fight and celebrate the beauty and goodness
in life.”
His team will be among three others that plan to meet
from four directions on the highest point in Africa at
sunrise. Brother Biscone’s team members are individuals
who themselves have personally been affected or close
to someone who has been affected by cancer. “My grandmother
died from cancer and my grandfather continues to battle
prostate cancer,” said Mark. “My aunt died from pancreatic
cancer just three weeks after being diagnosed, one of
my sisters had a bout with skin cancer and a close friend
is currently fighting the disease.”
Mark is asking everyone he meets to “please help me to
take the Great Joy of Serving Others to the next level”
by making a gift today, small or large. Mark explained,
“You will be making a difference and helping me to conquer
a mountain: physically, emotionally and spiritually.”
Donations can be made out to: American Cancer Society
and sent to the attention of Matt Flanigan, American Cancer
Society, 1400 N. Winton Rd., Rochester, N.Y. 14609. On
the memo line, write: Mark Biscone, Kili Climb, JOI. Additional
information can be found on the Journeys
of Inspritation website.
Brother Biscone is also asking anyone who makes a donation
to email him
so he can keep track of his progress. His goal is to raise
at least $100,000 for the American Cancer Society to use
for research on cures for cancer. The Fraternity also
encourages brothers to email notes of support to Brother
Biscone.
