You have more power than you realize when you buy something significant from someone that you probably won't see again.

Be in the mindset that you have to negotiate down to a price that you want to pay, not what you are willing to pay.
Use competition as leverage from one dealer to another. You have the power to walk, or temporarily refuse an offer, from one competitor and go to another.
Ask to speak to someone in a store who has the authority to negotiate with you.
Ask to purchase the demo or floor models when it comes to furniture or bedding.
If dealing with a salesperson on commission, offer cash versus credit card payment terms; cash-in-hand is more valuable than a payment plan.
Remember that it's not just the price you're negotiating, but the package of things that come along with the price. If you can't get a lower price, get the seller to throw in more items/things for that price.
Keep in mind the timing of the purchase: going into stores at the end of the month and getting either the owners of the stores or salespeople on commission to deal with you is usually advantageous.
Have FUN negotiating. Take your time, as time favors the buyer. The worst that can happen from your trying to negotiate is getting a no. . . and the best you'll get is a better price and package, one that you may have thought you could never receive.
