Phi Psi Adopts New Program.

In response to the increasing numbers of tragic events directly related to misuse of alcohol and the unfortunate general perception that Greek Life and alcohol go hand-in-hand, the Fraternity has adopted the AlcoholEDU program to educate members on the inherent dangers of alcohol misuse.

AlcoholEdu is a science-based course adopted as a major part of many universities' alcohol programming and taken by tens of thousands of students each year. The course aims not to preach but rather to educate students about alcohol and its effects on the mind and body. AlcoholEdu empowers students to make well-informed decisions, whether they choose to drink or not.

Surveys from more than 55,000 students who took AlcoholEdu in the summer and fall of 2004 demonstrate the effects of the program. After taking the course, 71 percent said they now know more about blood alcohol concentration (BAC), and 44 percent of men know more about how alcohol affects consent for sex. Nearly 70 percent of all users said they would recommend the program to other students.

This program allows the Fraternity to track the effect that going through the program has on students. At the end of the 2005-06 academic year, the Fraternity will receive detailed statistical data detailing the influence of AlcoholEDU. Phi Kappa Psi is requiring all new members to take part in the AlcoholEDU program during the coming school year and the program is also available for all members on a voluntary basis. Please watch for more information in the coming months about this new program. If you are interested in learning more about AlcoholEDU, or if you would like to try the program (your results will not be tabulated as part of the national undergraduate totals), contact the national headquarters.
