NYC Area Alumni Unite

"Knowing where to go and where to live doesn’t come that easily when you’re in a new place." That’s according to Nicholas Hsu, a 2006 Stanford graduate and California Beta Phi Psi who moved to New York to begin a career as an analyst in international political relations.

The new graduate came up empty-handed in his search for a nearby Phi Kappa Psi alumni group to help ease his transition.

"Then I met with another Cal Beta alumnus. Sachin Agarwal and I both lamented the fact that there wasn’t an association of alumni in New York City. Apparently one existed some years ago, and we knew there were still a fair number of graduates living in the area, so we decided it was worth trying to officially reorganize."

Phi Kappa Psi’s national office encouraged Brothers Hsu and Agarwal to pursue the endeavor. They attained the previous leader’s contact information and took the first step of setting up a Facebook group. "The response we got to that effort was well beyond anything we expected. It just took off from there," Hsu recalls.

More than 50 alumni signed up in the first ten days. But Nick knew the challenge would be to get people to come out to events, meet in person, and sign a roster to help petition Headquarters for an official charter. "People in New York are pretty busy - it wouldn’t be easy."

More than two dozen alumni attended to help elect officers during a kick-off event on Founder’s Day in February.

The group hopes to meet monthly and pursue goals as derived from a recent survey of its new members. Service and social opportunities alike are on the horizon! And the emerging NYC association boasts alumni of diverse ages and circumstances. Phi Kappa Psi invites all alumni living in and around New York City to take an active role in the newest chapter of its Alumni Association. Alumni organizations have long been an integral part of Phi Kappa Psi. The first graduate chapter, the predecessor of alumni associations, was formed in Attica, Indiana in 1880. Since that time scores of alumni groups, like the new NYC Alumni Association, have been organized throughout the country.
